KODIAK -- Someone illegally shot and killed a bison, and the newborn calf it was nursing likely died from stress.

Bill Burton, one of two bison ranchers on Kodiak Island, found it Monday.

He says someone on Sunday killed the bison by shooting it with a shotgun two or three times, just south of the Kodiak Launch Complex.

Witnesses said the calf — less than three days old — was nudging the cow on Sunday.

Burton tried to capture it Monday, but says it died.

Larry VanDaele, a wildlife biologist for the Department of Alaska Fish and Game, says anyone shooting an animal is poaching.

Alaska State Troopers were looking for a yellow extended-cab truck seen Sunday by witnesses near the site of the shooting.

This is so darn sad, and what a waste. Whomever is responsible, I hope your caught and the full weight of the law is brought down upon you. Obviously, they shouldn't be allowed to own a gun ever again because to kill something just for the thrill of it only shows to me they have some kind of mental disorder. This disorder may lead them to cause harm to a fellow human since they have little regard for life.

Seriously...why did the NM and AP list this as news? Does it make the news if/when someone illegally shoots/harvests another animal such as a moose or caribou? It will make the State Trooper blotter, but not to this extent.

This is just another attempt at making those who hunt and carry weapons look bad. I, and I am certain no other person who hunts or carries a weapon, in no way condone anything that person(s) did...but this is not news, it is slander towards people who hunt and support hunting.

Graphically depicting what was done, how the calf suffered. Come on NM...come up with something real.

I don't see how this is hurting legal gun owners who do things legally. What I see is somebody shooting for the fun of it. Shame on the IDOITS for poaching out of season. By the way I didn't know there was a hunting season on bison in the kodiak island

    kle,

Not everyone will see it they way you pointed out...

Having had to defend my rights as a gun owner numerous times, my passion for legally hunting numerous times against anti-hunting groups because of things like this; I find this article providing a reason for anti-hunting groups to fire up the boiler.

No kidding SHAME on the IDIOTS; however I don't see that as the point behind this story.

If it was posted to get the word out...so someone will talk about it and find the person who did it... then fine. A simple spot about a bison being poached/killed illegally on Kodiak, any information leading to the conviction of the person(s) responsible would have been suitable.

The report given by the AP... how did the Associated Press get this story?;... is filled with unneeded drama. Drama that only creates anger towards a general group of people (hunters and gun owners). And since it was posted by the always honest AP, wonder how many other "NM" type papers that have nothing better to list as "news" are posting this as news???

They probably posted it because you and I read it and are commenting on it right now. If you care enough to read it, they're on the right track. You may not like the news, but you're still reading it.

Didn't they harvest the meat? Also, I wonder how anyone could get close enough to a Bison with a calf to kill it with a shotgun. I really hope they do a follow-up and find out the whole story. This is sketchy and looks a little exaggerated.

I find myself in the odd position of defending the News-Miner but it saw a story that was worthy of printing and did so. If they had just printed a sketchy story about a bison being poached there would be a clamor for details. Poaching is a most execrable crime and I cannot envision it being done by an ethical hunter, which is to say the majority of hunters. However, by printing the entire story with what details it included, it may lead to someone reading it and saying, "Oh, yeah...I saw so-and-so heading out that way with a shotgun that same day. Hmmm."
I don't think a hunter shot them. I'd say it was like the article called it: a poacher shot the cow.
When the NM reports a poached moose or caribou they generally seem to include as many facts about it as possible, I've noticed. They may not make for pleasant reading but it's one way to help in the investigation of the crime and I support it. The more known about the crime, the more likely it will be solved.

    wow, not one racist comment

if it was a native that shot that bison (even if it was a GUESS) there would be five times the amount of comments with most of them bashing every native in the world.
