Request made to add abortion to gas line debate
Published Friday, April 18, 2008
JUNEAU -- Senate President Lyda Green has asked Gov. Sarah Palin to expand the upcoming special session to include two abortion bills.
The Wasilla Republican sent a letter to Palin on Thursday formally requesting that bills on parental notification and partial birth abortion be added to the call to review a natural gas pipeline.
Palin's spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said she did not know how the governor would respond. Palin gave birth to her fifth child early Friday morning.
The governor last month called a special session to begin in Juneau on June 3 to review TransCanada Corp.'s bid to build a gas pipeline from the North Slope to Alberta, Canada.
The two abortion measures passed the House during the recent legislative session but failed to be heard in the Senate.

Special sessions are limited to thirty days." (gender added)
It appears that the President of the Alaska Senate is opposed to the legislative review of the gas pipe line proposed by TransCanada or any subject related to the development of ALASKAN GAS.
It is past time for the ALASKAN LEGISLATURE SENATE MAJORITY to re-organize with new leadership.
Roe vs Wade is still the law of the land. We need to resolve this issues around the gas line resolved before Big Oil Companies steamroll Alaskans out of the benefits.
We definitely don't need any more regulation on abortion.
Why, oh, why can't they just focus on one thing and get 'er done?
Ohhhh, I get it!
Gas pipeline = our reliance on non-renewable energy = burning fossil fuels = global warming issues = abortion issues???
Ermm...yeeeaah..uh uh...
"...on parental notification and partial birth abortion be added.."
Could someone explain to me exactly what a 'partial birth abortion' is? Maybe it's just me, but I thought aborting a child was like pregnancy itself. Either it's there or it's not.
Yes, it does appear like Lyda Green is attempting to derail the special session by trying to add consideration of two highly emotional and very contentious bills, not related to the session's primary focus, to the session's agenda. If she succeeds, it's very likely all attention and debate will be focused on those two bills to the exclusion of any serious consideration of gas pipeline proposals.
I think I smell an ulterior motive, hidden agenda, or worse in this proposal.
I feel the goverment should focus on the oil crisis that is devistating the citizens of this state financialy and stay out of our bodies and our bedrooms!
Blame this not on Lyda so much, but on the old white men in the House of Representatives who have become fixated on what a psychiatrist might label a "fetus fetish"; but who don't seem to care as much for our children who are already born
I agree we don't need to start linking different issues. That's what causes a lot of people to vote no, they are always linking issues. Let's deal with one issue at a time that way each will get their equal time.
Cant see any good sense in this. It's just a distraction, and I'm not sure why. We need the state government to get off it's collective ass , and get us some gas. Kind of catchy. Get off your ass, get us some gas. Green's got a game going, and we're all the worse off for it.
glacierles, it's me... I like your catchy phrase! It would make a great bumper sticker.
I would bet just by reading this that Lyda Green is trying to crash this whole thing. We, once again, need to be ever vigilant about what our legislators are doing. I am not for/against abortion. I am against partial birth abortion, and think until 16, parents need to be notified, but lets keep our eyes on the ball!!!!
We could make a fortune on them, MissKitty.
Lyda's been after Sarah's throat for some time. This is Lyda's low point; proposed the day our Governer gives birth to a child.
Lyda...I see right through your attempt to muscle in your own agendas. If the powers that be were to ask me what I think of you and your timing, I'd tell them that you lose.
Hmmm, lets link a very emotionally charged issue like abortion to a gas pipeline. Is she trying to sneak the abortion issues through on the tail of the popular gas pipeline, or is she trying to derail the pipeline by linking the abortion issues?????
I sure as hell hope that this attempt at derailing one project in order to bring attention to a stupid bill is derailed.
My opinions on abortion notwithsatanding ( I'm absolutely pro choice), linking abortion rights to anything is a guarantee of a stupid argumentative legislative melee that decides nothing but gets a lot of press time.
Everyone should know that it is John Coghill and his male "pro-life" supporters who are behind Lyda's request to Governor Palin. It is important to place blame where it is most deserved. This is not to claim that the Senate President is blameless, of course!
Socrates-
Coghill is chairman of the house Rules committee.
Lyda is head of the senate.
You are right that Coghill only seems to pay any attention to this issue and a few others.
BUT
samiam is correct. In addition, I don't know if you guys are aware, Lyda is up for reelection this year and, according to the Mat-Su paper and comments I've read, a very viable and popular candidate is running against her in the primary. That is part of this.
I hope Lyda loses!
Further, if ya'all recall, Lyda was all for-100%- Murkowski's plan.
I'll say it again: Read blog by Stefan Milkowsi, 'Capitol Focus.'
Called "Surprise Announcement" or something from the day Big Oil announced their 'new plan.'
Lyda's in the thick of bad doings here. This IS an attempt to derail AGIA and the purpose of the session.
This session should be held in Fairbanks. Anchorage had a special session last year. Juneau had a special session last year.
It's our turn, and this issue is most directly related to our area. We are the pipline/haul road hub.
We are the hub for much of rural Alaska.
We, along with rural, have been hardest hit by prices.
I think that we should act now, and publicly insist that it's our turn, we want the session here.
If our local legislators won't help, they'll be exposed in a big election year.
