F&G plan

To the editor:
Since without exception every effort by man to “manage” wildlife has had unforeseen and always negative consequences, I would propose that if the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the politicians they work for truly have confidence in their plan to use genetics (testosterone) to alter fish stocks, then they should go on record as willing to accept responsibility both criminal and civil for any and all negative consequences.
Since the potential consequences will certainly be long-term, then that liability should be assigned to their heirs in perpetuity.
Only if they have that level of confidence should this plan be allowed to proceed. It’s easy to take actions if you are not held personally responsible and can’t be held liable for the outcome.
If Fish and Game and the governor are truly confident of the science behind this then that should not be a problem. To begin with it is totally unnecessary. We have been getting along just fine for many, many years without such experimenting. Seems like just another way to waste public money.
Also, to my knowledge, people participating in experiments are required to be informed and compensated.
Once responsibility is accepted as mentioned above and my check clears I will support this program.
Until then, don’t even suggest such nonsense.

All though I may share your fervor and devotion to accountability, you lost me at the point where you asked for there heirs to be held accountable. Get real.
I don't believe a thing these guys say. They'll 'manage' our fishing resources dry, just like Oregon and Washington.
It's bad science and Alaska waterways shouldn't be used as a test tube for laboratory experiments. These are decisions that cannot be undone, once they open the floodgates of genetic enhancement.

First of all, Alaska Fish and Game does not use geneticly altered fish for their stocking programs. They did have a limited program in the 90's where they attempted to geneticly alter fish and it was discontinued. Understand that NONE of the fish altered were ever release into Alaskan waters.
The current way they change fish is by adjusting the temperature of the water and applying pressure to the eggs during or just after fertilization. At no time are chemicals added to to the water for the pupose of altering the fish. Check out the below link.
