Energy crisis

Published Thursday, April 3, 2008

To the editor:

In regards to the March 28 article about the Fairbanks energy crisis, I encourage Interior residents to think hard about their energy usage. At the current temperatures we are experiencing, I still cannot believe that I am seeing cars idling in parking lots. There is no reason to leave your car running other than the sheer convenience.

I also know of many people who leave lights on in rooms nobody occupies and televisions on when nobody is watching. If we were all more efficient in our usage of petroleum products, then energy crises wouldn’t hurt as much.

I understand that more is at play than simple supply-and-demand economics; however, I feel that we can all make changes in our everyday lives to reduce our dependence on petroleum.

Hmmmm - you sound as if you could answer a global warming question for me...

If most 'scientists' say we have reached peak oil then isnt the following true....

We burned through half the worlds oil supply in a hundred years...give or take....and the temperature rise over this same time period has been approximately 1 degree on average.

Soooo....if we burn up the other half...then the earth will heat up---> 1 more degree if the relationship is somewhat linear...Big freakin deal..

I know...I know...I am a simpleton and its not as easy as that and we are beyond the point of no return and ice is falling into the ocean and cows are farting too much and the penguins are melting.....
ok ok - i will grant you 2 degrees of additional warming instead! This would represent a 100% increase over the temperature increase during the 1st half of the oil being used up by greedy americans...

I say - burn it all....then the energy and warming fanatics will have to find a new religion...it will also force us to find new sources of energy...which I am totally cool with - I want a Delorean that runs off of garbage before I die

wow, global warming is such a joke. it is not as bad as they say. plus why arent the trees doing better seein as they do live off of corbon dioxide, they would be thriving. the earth is on a natrual cycle not cause by man...or cow..lol. but what we do need to stop is listening to all the butt hurt poloticians telling us to live green

Yeah, global warming is a joke. How can the polar ice caps melt when everyone knows the earth is flat? When will the eggheads and butt hurt poloticians explain that one? HELLO?? THERE ARE NO POLES!!??

Wow - never thought of that....without icecaps the theory really goes out the window.

But --- if there are no icecaps then there probably wasn't an ice age. Without an ice age the dinosaurs would not have died and turned into oil ....and this whole burning fossil fuel global warming crisis would not be happening...freakin dinosaurs....

ya'know - i had an aunt that died when i was very young. Do you think she has turned into oil yet like the dinosaurs did?

Why the hell is all the oil in Saudi Arabia anyway?...was there a mass migration of dinosaurs there before the mass extinction/asteroid hit/alien conquest or whatever?

    i am now so confused....

I have heard of that theory before...tis something to think about

A little on the Art Bell side for me - but I will be the first to admit that we really have no freaking clue yet about oils origin OR the consequences of driving our cars around...(affixes blinders to eyes)

if a little global warming will melt my drive faster than so be it...you may see me doing laps down Cushman today because I don't wanna go home and shovel...maybe my cars emissions will be enough to do the trick

I simply can't *believe* such bigoted ignorance exists in the community in which I live.

You don't have to "believe" in global warming to have noticed that the price of oil has risen dramatically within the past year. You don't have to "believe" in global warming to see how this increase in oil has impacted so many areas of our lives - from what we pay to put gasoline in our cars, to what we pay to heat our homes, to what we pay for electricity, to what we pay at the grocery store.

The author of this letter is simply proposing that we waste less in order to make us less beholden to the availability and price of petroleum products. The wisdom and logic of his argument is simply not to be refuted.

Yet, chime in the Fairbanks Ignorati.

The subject of this letter had *nothing* to do with global warming. Yet you idiots turned it into one.

Waste less = save more money. What about saving money don't you understand?

The Fairbanks Ignorati turned this letter into an argument about global warming. Myself, I believe that global warming is taking place, right here under our own noses. I believe it not because of what some greenie outside interests are telling me, or what some tree hugging scientists espouse . . . I believe it is occurring simply because of what I've seen, with my own two eyes, what has been happening in Alaska over the last 20 years . . . glaciers are melting, and winters here are now nowhere near as cold as what I experienced 20 years ago.

To the Fairbanks Ignorati, to the deniers of global warming . . . keep thinking what you think. It's always good to have a contrary, and very vocal, opposing opinion. Keep thinking what you think, and deny what your own eyes are telling you. In the meantime . . .

I'll be busy trying minimize my dependence on petroleum products; I'll be busy adapting myself to climate change.

Not to worry, we will soon have a couple of colder than normal years and it will be time for us all to prepare for the next ice age. Wait, this just in....the sky is falling!

    "Fairbanks Ignorati"

Thank you for providing a name for these folks. There sure are a lot of them out there.

The effects of a warming climate are all around, but they choose to ignore it. You can provide all of the facts you want, including the negative effects, but they will still deny it. I've had my share of talks with people who make a claim there is no information regarding some issue. I provide the peer-reviewed papers to back up my point. And the denial continues. I guess if you deny something then it isn't real.

You both get me - the great unwashed "Ignorati" wrong.

    I don't deny global warming - I embrace it!

If the temps get warmer...then wont we use less heating oil...and wont that help prices decline...and won't that mean that we will ultimately spend less on heating oil in the future? - talk about wearing blinders...

What, exactly, do you do to 'adapt' yourself to climate change anyway...talk about ignorati - - - maybe you are looking at adding pigment to your skin! or throwing your sweaters away....

the winters have went from -50 to -45...definitely a lot to adapt to there...

another side effect - the street people will be warmer! You are just a street people hater arent you. Guess you could give them classes on how to adapt to being warmer...

I dub thee the Fairbanks tree-hugging granola growers...come to think of it...if the temps continue to rise, you may be able to grow/raise/whatever your own granola here too!!!

I think I'm gonna plant a banana tree in my front yard this summer!!! GOOOOOOOO warming....guess it would suck if you built on permafrost, though...maybe thats why you are so mad - hope your house doesnt sink down too far...always pays to build on a hill :)

Remember the "holes in the ozone" scare? Wow, good thing we averted that disaster! When this bogus "global warming" crap is over, what will be next?
The "concensus of scientists" that have "proven" global warming are running a scam to justify their existances!

All that being said, I think we need to switch more from a society run on oil, to one powered by wind, sun and sea. I think we start with electricity for our homes at the same time get some 40-50 MPG vehicles out there. Not to save the planet, just to save me some money. Self-interest will drive it people, listen to Adam Smith!

    Good Morning!
I appreciate Mr. Slater's reminders. As a parent I sometimes feel my mantra is shut the door! turn out the lights in your room! turn off the TV!...

We've survived the scary fuel delivery bills this winter, and watching the economy head into a recession, our family is investing in ways to make our home more energy efficient. This means we'll be diverting some of our $$ saved up for recreation to pay for northern living.

I'm glad we finished our new green-house, at least we'll save a little $$ on fresh produce this summer!

Wow. Natural selection will take care of the people who didn't "believe," (like global warming is some sort of religion, instead of science). The rest of us will have some chance to adapt to the new and different conditions on our planet. Hopefully that adaptation will include admitting that humans messed up and need to take better care of our resources in the future.

    *just a little info here...
Oil isn't from dinosaurs, it is from plankton & other smaller organisms in ancient seas (you know back when it was warmer the last time in the cycle).

You know, I'd love to chime in here, but I think most of you know how I feel about religions! *LOL*

At least I learned a new word "ignorati", nice!

I will say, however, that if I want to leave my TV on for a few minutes while I run to the store, I'll go ahead and do that. Does anyone really think that turning off a TV (which doesn't really take much power) for a few minutes is going to make any difference? I seriously doubt that I'll notice the difference in my GVEA bill. However, it may deter a property thief (who would get away without an investigation)

Seems to me that this supposed "crisis" is misnamed as an energy crisis - maybe it should be called the "21st century crusades crisis". Afterall, its just fallout from this wonderful Christian-Islamic war that we are fighting (you know, like the one from the dark/middle ages?).

Its not like there are actually any oil shortages or anything...

I am a scientist and I say global warming is a myth. (I am not a scientist but I could easily be one of the 17,000 scientists who dissent as to the cause of global warming)
How about the censoring of scientists who dissent as to the cause of global warming?
    Scientific Marxism?

    Who is winning?

Does the global warmers cost you more money or Big Oil?

Gotta jump in on this line before it is to late. That is "Fairbanks Ignorati" to all of you. New words gotta love it.

So global warming is it, I thought that was what all this spring time mud puddles was all about. I understand the concern that Mr. Slater has for turning off a light or two but as most have stated it is just a drop in the bucket. And if turning off a light will reduce the price of gas at the pump or fuel for my furnace I would surely do it. But the facts are pointing that what I do in my house will not effect what the cost is going to be at the pump. Nor will planting a tree as Al Gore does stop global warming. May appease ones soul or a conscious but in the long run it will not stop the world from warming a degree or two. Sort of like pushing a rock up a hill to let it roll back down again.

To those who are convinced that global warimg is true I ask for scientific proof to support the issue. Change is a fact and where is it stated that the earth must stay one way. Embrass the change.

Global warming my ***. I sure did not feel the so called global warming this past winter. I demand if someone is hogging the heat from the global warming i want in i have some cash stashed under the ice in my back yard and when it melts it could be yours. Dont know when it will melt seeing how it could FREEZE again this week. As far as the icebergs melting who gives a **** i sure dont. Global warming is just another smoke screen made up so big oil can rip us off. As for the price at the pump thank big oil they are the ones running this country into the ground while we struggle to fuel our houses and cars they sit in their ivory towers smoking two hundred dollar cigars lighting them will hundred dollar bills. Laughing at us while we think global warming is behind it.

    Tony08 -

Okay, now I'm confused... Perhaps you can explain to me how "Global warming is just another smoke screen made up so big oil can rip us off."

Seems to me that the two are at odds - Big Oil wants more exploration and more oil burning. Global warmers want less exploration and less oil burning.

    What did I miss?

Big oil doesn't want alternative sources of energy - that would take away their oil profits.
