GVEA miscues

To the editor:

As a member of Golden Valley Electric Association, I am dismayed at the recent attacks made by uninformed members against their fellow members of District 2 who volunteered to serve on a nominating committee for the upcoming election for the board of directors.

The committee, operating under requirements laid out in the bylaws, forwarded two names for the members’ consideration in the election.

There is no requirement to forward the name of an incumbent. There is however a nomination by petition process for anyone not nominated, which apparently has been accomplished by Tom DeLong.

Any of several other applicants who were interested in serving District 2 also could have used the petition process to get on the ballot.

I would hope that, in the future, members of GVEA would make a little effort to educate themselves before they start a public attack on dedicated members who have volunteered and are providing a service to them.

In fact, some of these vocal members had equal opportunity to volunteer to serve on their district’s nominating committee. Did they answer the call? No, but now they’re willing to criticize those who did.

It is interesting to note that the GVEA board appointed a task force in November to review the very rules that are the center of the nomination issue, and the board is considering the recommendations put forth by that task force. In the meantime, however, the rules in place now are being followed — no conspiracy, no malicious intent.

If people have a concern, they should contact the board of directors and make them aware. Don’t resort to hate mail, uninformed letters to the editor, mean spirited phone calls and other harassment of the volunteers who did their best to serve honestly and fairly.

Nonsense. You are defending the indefensible, Mr. Adams.

When the 'nominating' committee decided to not forward the name of the incumbent, Mr. Delong, for reelection, they were telling the GVEA members who ELECTED Tom Delong to the board that they were WRONG in the last election.

This is a shameful event for GVEA.

Here Here 5050. As I said before, if those who serve in positions where there may be controversy can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. The very people criticizing what happened are the same ones that put Tom in the director's seat to begin with. If people can't cry foul when something fishy comes up...why live in America? Specific individuals on the committee are not at question...the group as a whole and the process is. Before making a decision to get involved in something like this, people need to understand that this is Fairbanks and criticism is always going to be there...justified or not.

Readers, please also read the other letters & comments explaining the process. Criticism is fine, accusing bad intent is not.

Or.... They were telling the members that it just happens to be possible that someone MORE QUALIFIED applied this time.

Or, you can stick to your tinfoil conspiracy theory. Which ever...

dear steve- unfortunately for you that is a hazard of being on a committee that has impact into peoples lifes. There was a guy who set the mold for mobilizing the voice of the public by the name of Salinsky, he started going into the neighborhoods of the people in his city and asking if they knew of any affordable housing in there neighborhoods because back in his neighborhood they were planning on some community development that would put a lot of low income families out of there homes. Salinsky's methods where so effective that they are patterned and still used today in every way you listed that people shouldnt express themselves. I find your comments ironically humurous...
