Fairbanks police seized more than 60 marijuana plants from an apartment Thursday.

The raid occurred in the 1400 block of Gillam Way with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Agency after several months of investigation.

A total of 56 still-growing plants and a dozen harvested plants were seized by authorities.

Several other agencies, including other local police departments, Alaska State Troopers and the FBI assisted in the investigation.

The suspected marijuana grower is a 59-year-old woman whose identification has not been released by police . Charges have been forwarded to the U.S. attorney's office.

It's good to see the FBI and local drug authorities are getting all the dangerous grandmas off the streets. I know I will sleep better tonight knowing that that 59 year old woman is not loose on the streets of Fairbanks.

Did it really take three different police agencies to take in a senior citizen? Our local authorities are going to be the laughing stock of Alaska if this story hits the associated press. I bet they knocked her door down with a battering ram because she couldn't hear them knocking on the door without her hearing aids. I bet they had backup at the back door in case she decided to run for it with her cane. I guess the that we can count on our local authorities for a good laugh.

Fairbanksgas- Does 59 make it all right to grow? I doubt 60 plants were for personal use, probably more like selling. How much of this makes it to our youth? But then again maybe she is keeping it all for heself.

ya know you all read every day about these drunk drivers --people who are drunk cause all kinds of havoc.. jeeeeze you can buy a lethal dose of alcohol.. try smoking pot yourself yourself to death--the worst case scenario would be you would eat all the food in the fridge.. i am not advocating legalizing drugs but cmon this reefer madness thing is ridiculous.. but ya know growing 60 plants i guess is not cool--she shoulda only had a few..

If this is all the law enforcement agencies have to do, then we have too many law enforcement agencies. Marijuana has become the Bush administration's scapegoat for all social problems. I'm one hundred percent against marijuana in the hands of our young people, but, as a country who has more people incarcerated than any other country on earth, maybe it's time to reassess our legal priorities.

tbear's comment most closely reflects my thoughts. Alcohol - and cigarettes - are both legal, but from I've seen in other people's lives, and have experienced in my own, is that alcohol and cigarettes are far more destructive to the individual and society than marijuana could ever be. I drink and smoke, both, but if anything, it's alcohol and tobacco that should be illegal considering how destructive they are. I used to smoke bud, but finally gave it up because of what getting busted with a positive UA, or possession, could do to my career.

One thing nobody's mentioned so far is the income those 60 plants, that whole growing operation, provided to our ganga lovin' grandma. Probably a heck of a lot more than waitressing, or cashiering, or running a day care center out of her home. If she had a good profession, she probably wouldn't have found the need to venture outside the law to earn a living. That growing operation was probably her best option in terms of being financially independent. Too bad pot's illegal. Too bad granny got busted.
