Blog: MRE-Military Bits

The number 2 blog about MREs

Published Tuesday, July 22, 2008

I thought long and hard about how to write this next blog entry in a way that gets the point across and also offends the sensibilities of as few people as possible. Here goes nothing.

On Tuesday I had only been eating Army food for three days, and it had been, well, a few days since-how should I put this- the Brown family had paid the rent for their basement apartment, and I was hoping that I wouldn't have to take some kind of drastic measure and get an eviction notice.

So somewhere between talking about West Point grads and the military origins of the term "hooker" (seriously, it goes back to the Civil War), this topic came up with Lt. Jeff Chase of the 2/8th field artillery.

"The MRES (keep the Browns from paying rent)," he said. And yes, I'm cleaning up the language quite a bit here.

Apparently the content of the meals is chosen in part for this, which probably explains why some MREs aren't exactly known for their quality.

There was at one time a rumor that the two pieces of gum included in some MREs act as a laxative, but Chase claims that chewing 10 pieces of it simultaneously did not in fact act as an eviction notice.

I'm afraid there are some things that happen at NTC that are considered classified, and I'm not allowed to talk about them.

MRE'S are great for winning the war. I have been told by more than one if you feed our son these they have cheese in them that PALMER loves. When he finishes his cheese nobody is left standing for miles around when he cuts loose! HA. HA. I am sure PALMER would want me to share this! HA.HA.

It is not actually the food causing your rent to be delayed. More likely the changes in environment, weather, and physical stress are resulting in internal stresses. Dehydration (even mild cases) can make paying rent a drawn out painful process. Get some rest, drink some hot chocolate with your coffee, and start collecting the tissues from the MREs to cover the back rent.

In response to ONAPA (Ok?) I have to say your information is inaccurate. You'd have more luck making brown if you ate the plastic it came in. A friend told me to try the vegetarian, that's helped him in the past. It's the transition from normal food to carb and calorie loading food, you should make sure you're getting enough liquids.

    AWESOME

KcKoerner, actually ONAPA is real close to right on. You need to drink alot more with MRE's also they are almost pure fuel for the body, and do not create as much waste as normal meals do. For me after about day three a dip of Cope and a good hot cup of Army coffee and the plumbing is back to normal.
