Monday, March 31, is Seward's Day in Alaska, a state holiday commemorating the March 30, 1867, signing of the treaty transferring Alaska from Russia to the United States. Seward was the secretary of state who negotiated the purchase of the land that became Alaska. State and some local offices will be closed on Monday.
