Photo by Alaska Polar Regions Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks

This photograph was taken by Welden Studio in Fairbanks on April 16, 1908, and shows the moonlit First Avenue "As the Moon Rose Over the City." I would guess it was a lot easier to stay on your side of the river in the springtime when it looked like this! Businesses from the far left include the Butte Cafe (owned by the Bentley family), an outlet clothing store, the Owl Drug Co., E.R. People's, the Empire Coffee House, O.K. Baths, Imperial Cigar Stare, the Arcade Cafe and a batch of First Avenue Bars, including the Senate, Eagle, Seattle, Tanana and others that are not readable. -- Candy Waugaman
