A gull rests on a totemic representation of Alexander Baranof in Sitka, Alaska on March 26, 2008. Some say the original design was altered to dishonor Baranof, the former Russian colonial governor, by stripping him of his clothes.
A totem pole designed in 1940 by George Benson stands in front of the Pioneer's Home in downtown Sitka's totem square on March 26, 2008. Some say the pole is a "shame pole" and the figure at the top is a naked Alexander Baranof, the first colonial governor of Russian America and manager of the Russian American Co. in the early 19th century. Some want to replace this symbol of ridicule with one of healing.
This panoramic photograph, taken from the north side of the Chena River looking south, was probably taken in 1905 from near the location of today's Denali State Bank and Doyon Buildings. The buildings on the left side of this photo were destroyed in the 1906 fire, and all but a few of the buildings on the right side of the picture have been torn down over the years for "progress." Look at what a wide river and beach the Chena used to be! — Candy Waugaman
