Jerry Brown, International Permafrost Association president, welcomes participants and attendees to the Ninth Internation Conference on Permafrost on Sunday, June 29, 2008, during the opening ceremony in the Davis Concert Hall. The conference, held every five years, returns to Fairbanks after a quarter century of being held at sites around the world. Next week, more than 700 scientists and researchers will be at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for lectures, presentations and field trips dedicated to permafrost.
