Ahh, a real keeper ... but Danny Stepp III didn’t keep it, he released it back into George Lake outside Delta. Stepp, who works at Boat Shop, was out with friends this past weekend trying out a new line of boats, and they decided to wet some fishing lines. Stepp’s big pike measured 39 inches and was estimated to weigh approximately 18 pounds. The day before, a friend caught a 41-inch pike weighing in at 20 pounds. It also was released. “We don’t keep the big ones,” Stepp said, “just the small ones.” The fishermen theorize the big spawners will keep the pike population constant in the lake which can only be reached by boat.

The eagle, originally from Tatitlik, was released after being held in captivity since 2005 due to a broken left wing. During that time it was in the care of the Bird Treatment and Learning Center, a nonprofit organization centered in Anchorage and devoted to the rehabilitation of injured/orphaned wild birds.

Definitely a booming town at the time of this photograph, the boats are the Delta, Rock Island and Tanana, all steamboats that served passengers and freight in Fairbanks and up and down the Yukon River. Many of the miners from Nome and Dawson took transport on these boats with the discovery of gold in the Tanana Valley to find their fortune in Fairbanks. These boats are tied up at the N.C. Co. Dock and the Pioneer Dock, which were downtown near today's KeyBank building and parking lot. — Candy Waugaman
