Jeff Adams of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service holds the award he and his teammates at the federal building won last year for the most miles logged during the "Don't Be Fuelish" competition, Thursday morning, April 10, 2008. Three businesses competed in the contest that had employees log the miles they traveled to and from work using alternate modes of transportation such as biking or jogging last summer. The federal building, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and the Fairbanks North Star Borough combined to log 16,422 miles, saving 821 gallons of fuel which also totaled $2,405.85 in monetary savings. At 20 pounds of carbon emissions per gallon, that also lessened the businesses carbon footprint by 16,420 pounds.
