In a speech Thursday in New York, Sen. Harry Reid had harsh words for Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski about her attempt to stop the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating the emission of greenhouse gases.

As the New York Times reported today, Murkowski “is now at the center of a storm by pushing to strip U.S. EPA of its ability to regulate for greenhouse gas emissions.”

Here is an excerpt from Reid’s speech at a geothermal energy conference:

“Senators Kerry, Graham and Lieberman have taken a lead in trying to craft a framework that would get more than 60 votes. We will need at least that many for two reasons: One, because any bill that seeks to rein in global warming pollution will be fought very hard by the same companies that profit most heavily from polluting. And two, because the rules of the Senate make it easy for a determined minority to stand in the way of all the good ideas you’re hearing at this forum.

“For example, next week Senator Murkowski of Alaska may offer an amendment–to a completely unrelated bill, it should be noted–that would stop the EPA from protecting Americans from global warming pollution. It’s a highly political move, and a highly hazardous one to our health and the environment.

“If this Senator succeeds, it could keep Congress from working constructively in a bipartisan manner to pass clean energy legislation this year. That’s why I will work hard to defeat this misguided amendment.

“I hope that doesn’t come to that. It would be an embarrassment for the United States to fall any further behind other countries, competitors of ours in the global economy whose governments strongly support their own renewable energy companies."

The criticism by Reid follows a letter signed Monday by all Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee opposing Murkowski’s proposal.

“Debating policy choices regarding the appropriate response to unchecked climate change is fair and the Senate will continue to evaluate the best tools for addressing greenhouse gas emissions, but repealing an endangerment finding based upon years of work by America’s scientists and public health experts is not appropriate,” the 12 senators said.

Murkowski also came in for criticism after the Washington Post reported that two lobbyists who were Bush administration EPA staffers were involved in the process of developing her amendment.

Murkowski’s staff responded that “while the senator believes we should take steps to reduce our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, she won’t do it under the threat of regulations that could severely hamper our nation’s economic recovery.”

A statement from Murkowki’s office, published on a Washington Post blog, says that before contacting any outside group,  the senator’s staff sought assistance from EPA attorneys, but they wouldn’t help, so “we sought out the best Clear Air Act experts we could find.” The attorneys are now lobbyists who  have various clients, including utilities.

This is  Murkowski’s speech to the Senate on this topic last month. She says the EPA effort is a serious threat to the U.S. economy.

ckn longhorn - If it took anonymity to get people to say what they really feel without inhibitions then all I can say is that at least we are dealing with the truth as best percieved today.

Sen. Reid speaks from such high moral ground. I'm sure he has never acted in a partisan way or taken money from people who agree with his positions on issues.

ckn,

I think it is both, but more of the ugly being drawn out by technology and people not knowing who you are.

Did anyone else wonder why the EPA won't help Lisa? Because she is a Republican? Maybe the EPA has an agenda as well? That is my main question.

Very well said, Sirkahn.

I often lament the increased polarization of this once great country, and these pages are a classic example. I often wonder whether people, in general, have just gotten meaner and more self-centered, or if the technology (especially the anonymity) have just encouraged something ugly that perhaps has always been there.

But, I think you're right on - these pages, I fear, indicate just how American may truly fall - from within.

Way to keep the checks and balances even Lisa. If one goes this way, you go the other. That is how it is supposed to work right?

I'm proud of you Senator Murkowski. The executive branch is overreaching their authority in pursuit of what they seem to perceive as benevolent strong arm tactics based on questionable science. Some will accept tyranny in the name of environmentalism (or national health care). I, like many, question their motives.

If the comments below are an average show of what voting citizens, representing the leading country in the free world have to say here and how they behave towards each other, .... then ladies and gentlemen... next to global warming, we got quite a few other things to address.

Keep it up Murkowski and you might earn back my vote.

The election of a spineless begging Begich Democrat is an error we will come to regret.

I would argue we need to elect some sourdough fresh out of their cabin fever and send them to D.C. That should shake things up a bit.

Right on Trouty. I brave soul that stands up for the obvious reality. If any of you did some home work on the tons of green house gas chemicals that are released into our environment.

Like yesterdays news on the contamination in the water in North Pole. Check out the details. They only talk about the lesser chemical spill. Look in the back records. It lists BENZENE. There is an incredible amounts of dangerous chemicals being used in our lives now. This is really all about the chemicals being used that has to be stopped now. It's already been harmful to these who have cancer or have a chemical injury from chemical waste that is in our groundwater. Get informed and take your heads out of the sand.

After those brillant scientist were caught manipulating (lying) the evidence.

I'd say the man made global warming B.S. is on thin ice!!!

If we put half the money into green energy development that we have spent on global warming studies, and paying those dumb#*% scientist. We would already be free from those oppressive big bad fossil fuels fool.

STOP THE LIE... you science boys game is up.Now go get a real j.o.b.

Plus we dont have to worry about global warming spreading poverty the OBamhanation is taking care of that right now!!!

Keep up the good work Lisa. You have more common sense in your fingernail than Reid has in his entire body. Begich needs to back away from Reid big time and support Lisa's position.

I wouldn't want to be the last politician off the climate change bus. That whole scam is coming apart.

Worse than that is going to happen if we allow some of the people in government to use global warming as the crisis to place powers of all branches in the same hands, which as Madison put it , may justly be pronounced the vary definition of tyranny. That is where it's heading with the EPA.

We should focus on and address global warming ( whether its global or not,its long-term or not, man-made or not or if it will be very consequential or not).

But don't kid yourselves, this is being used for something more sinister ( whether intentionally or by foolish idealism ).

I would rather die a citizen in a flood than live as a subject on a gently rolling hill with a temperate breeze.

Let's get rid of the bums in 'power', then deal with problems properly.

Let's put our focus on the problem, which is global warming, and not the people in our government. We face short term problems with our economy which will be exacerbated by the longer term problem of global warming. Which problem do we focus on? The only way to reduce carbon inputs into the atmosphere is to wean ourselves as a culture off of fossil fuels. If we put half the money wasted on political lobbying into the development of solar and wind energy we would be halfway there. Pushing the carbon problem into the future will only make it worse when we are hit by coastal flooding, crop failures, and problems of disease and crime as poverty spreads.

I hope a lot of folks take the time to listen to the Senator's remarks. The cost to Akaskan's, in both time and project dollars is would efect everyone in a very negative manner...

The cost of the mistake made in the election of Obama ane Begich may be to great for us to overcome in the years to come...

People accross American are starting to pay attension, and I hope it is not to late...
