FAIRBANKS — Tammie Wilson’s campaign manager said the assemblywoman is probably too far behind Luke Hopkins to win the borough mayor’s race.
Still, she won’t be conceding until all of the votes are counted on Tuesday, Rick VanderKolk said.
“Let the voters have their say,” he said. “Statistically, it’s unlikely that she’ll pull it off.”
Hopkins has a 617-vote lead with an estimated 2,700 absentee, questioned and early votes yet to be counted, according to the borough clerk. The two assembly members went to a runoff election after neither grabbed at least 40 percent of the vote in the six-person mayoral race on Oct. 6.
A precinct breakdown of the runoff election shows Hopkins, a five-year veteran on the assembly, had more votes than Wilson in all of the Fairbanks city precincts, Ester, the University area, the Goldstream Valley, Farmers Loop, the Steese Highway and Steele Creek.
Wilson had higher totals than Hopkins at the precincts nearest the Fairbanks International Airport as well as in North Pole, the Badger Road area, Chena Lakes, Fox, Two Rivers, Moose Creek, Salcha and the military installations.
“You have the traditional political affiliations with the east (more conservative) and the west (less conservative),” said Garry Hutchison, a former assemblyman and one of the four mayoral hopefuls who was eliminated on Oct. 6.
“I think it’s significant that Luke Hopkins took the town,” Hutchison said on Wednesday. “What I think carried the day yesterday was the crossover. There was a Republican crossover. I think that Tammie didn’t appeal to the business community.”
Hopkins, a registered Democrat with a long history in Fairbanks, attracted the support of several prominent business-minded Republicans. Wilson, a registered Republican and a regular on local talk radio, drew much of her support from a passionate conservative base.
Fairbanks North Star Borough elections are non-partisan.
While Hopkins prevailed in the 10 Fairbanks city precincts, four precincts were close. Two are within one or two votes.
VanderKolk predicts Wilson will gain a couple of city precincts after the outstanding ballots are counted.
“The gap will shrink between the two candidates but not enough,” he said.
Wilson and supporters have said a string of late-September newspaper articles may have cost her votes. One focused on a neighbor’s criticism of stored junk on Wilson’s property east of Fairbanks, criticism that followed word from a reporter to the neighbor that a previous complaint against the property had legally expired.
“If somebody would have checked first, that wouldn’t even have been an article,” Wilson said, adding that she was frustrated by what she sensed was media bias during the final week of the race.
VanderKolk agreed with Wilson’s assertion. He also pointed to a news story about the Interior Alaska Conservative Coalition being under investigation by the state for allegedly spending money to help Wilson. The group reportedly failed to register with the Alaska Public Offices Commission.
The organization’s executive director is a deputy treasurer for Wilson’s campaign.
VanderKolk said the news reports may have cost Wilson some votes.
Both campaigns said they urged supporters to vote early, and many of the uncounted ballots are from people who did vote early.
“All of our calls the last two weeks for the campaign were reminding people to do early voting,” said Grier Hopkins, who managed his father’s campaign. “All of the e-mails we sent out were reminding people. Anyone who came to the campaign office, we told them to go and vote early also.”
Whatsamatter all you Liberal wackos? You can dish it out, but you can't take it? As long as the Newsminer is trying to be fair with the rules that they impose for everyone, I'm going to exercise my 1st Amendment rights, regardless of you fascist Liberals who love censorship when it involves trying to quiet your opposition. I maintain my right to help balance the playing field........and, I maintain that you Libs are disconnected and are causing ecomomic and social ruin to this country. And, you will be fought head-on with these issues.
When you stop name-calling..............we might too.
Thank you, Newsminer.
And as for cowering behind an anonymous handle, and saying nasty things about candidates- maybe you should grow up? I was sure that kind of immature crap was left in middleschool; so either bigfut is 12, or he just has no tact.
This is democracy folks- maybe your candidate won, maybe they didn't, but it's not YOUR decision, it's up to popular vote. If you don't like the system, you are welcome in a multitude of communist countries I'm sure, or you can try to change it yourself, and run for election.
Just make sure you have a VERY thick skin- because people drooling over their keyboards for 16 hours a day on the DNM site will surely be ranting about your weight, hair, family, house, lawn, car you drive, ect.
Whether or not anyone listens is a different story.
I understand frustration. But bigfut is WAY out of line. Luke does not deserve that type of insults. Of course, neither does Tammie, North Pole, or us 'hicks' who live in North Pole and the surrounding area.
Here is my frustration. Some of you all are still at it. We have voted; whoever wins, wins. We must make the best of whomever we get. If you don't like who is running, maybe you should run yourself? Of course, ask Luke, Tammie, Sarah, or Barack what type of insults, degradation, and outright lies will be told about you and your family. Gee, I wonder why good people don't run?
Pat
As for Wilson, she will not "gain a couple of city precincts" as VanderKolk predicted. The absentee ballots are counted separately, not divided by precinct. Hopkins won all 10 city precincts, most by a substantial margin. The only precincts outside the North Pole area that voted for Wilson were Airport, Pike, and Fox. Thank you, Fairbanks, for not letting North Pole decide the results of this election.
ooohhh jeez. You Libs are such a sad bunch. You confuse the truth for anger, you confuse a little hyperbole for manifesto, and you confuse a little fun for blind hatered. I just read a lot, understand when bullshit is being tossed around by a bunch of government drones, and I don't take crap from eco-fascists either. By the way, I do have a little bit of hair on my body, but its kind of peachy-fuzzy. I'm a warm and snuggly little bigfut, the kind Liberals love to take home to momma. Sorry all, if the truth offends. Problem is, when I hear Libs try to rationalize anything, it makes me want to throw-up. I'll try to be nicer in the future and I'll begin my anger management classes ASAP. But in the meantime, show a little tolerance and compassion. And would ya pleeze practice a little bit more of that political correctness crap that you love to preach to others.
Yeah and bigfut is just a warm fuzzy little creature too.
Have you slipped off your medications? Your anger is pretty scary.
Stick it to them, girl.
TAMMIE will certainly tighten this race by next Tues. All the gov't workers and UAF employees who are at the trough came out strong on Tues to protect their jobs. They all need that medical insurance from their gov't jobs so that when they hit 55 or 60 they know that early Alzheimers and other mental diseases from drug overusage will at least be covered in part by their former govt employers. That's how the system works, folks. The other wackos who aren't yet fully afflicted by mental illness will be using their UAF pensions and govt retirement to take trips to Cooba.
A lot of "older" conservatives use the months of October and early November to take their vacations to hotter climes. They all vote, and U know that they voted for TAMMIE.
I bet $$$$ that TAMMIE gets at least 63% of the uncounted votes next week. Just watch!!! This is going to make Uncle Lukie want to go out and commit Hari Kari with a new super bong. Hope he takes Uncle Wacko with him. Fairbanks will get to see who the real sore losers are. Luke is going to look like a crazed dude who grew a new set of "wild eyes," to match his madman look. He's already looking pretty ragged around the ears and chin.
And TAMMIE..........well pretty clever lady. If for some reason she loses by a few votes, she has already secured a job with the legislature. She could still help cut off Lukie's balls when he goes begging and complaining for more $$$$ in Juneau.
My only remaining question: Why was TAMMIE so kind in this race? She should have bound Uncle Lukie and his gang of Wackos right smack into the Obama camp. That would have taken care of Lukie. FAirbanks and the area in general "HATES" Obama. It would have been a referendum to end wackiness in the Interior. But until we get most of those UAF hangers on out to pasture with the other sheep, they'll still turn out to do their crying and whining.
As for Hutchinson, Wilkins, the woman with the gift shop, and other turncoats (Bernie Karl Marx): won't they be surprised if TAMMIE pulls it off. The previously mentioned (RINOs) can start hooking-up with the bong users at UAF to produce a very scary-looking bunch of half-breed wackos.
TAMMIE: quit being so goddamn polite to your enemy wackos. Stick it to them, girl.
