ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A two-hour test of natural gas conservation by utilities in Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska reduced consumption by about 3 percent.

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan says Wednesday's test shows people would conserve in the event of an emergency.

The Anchorage Daily News reports the Homer Electric Association had the biggest reduction at nearly 7 percent. Elmendorf Air Force Base cut nearly 5 percent.

Others taking park included the Chugach Electric Association, Municipal Light and Power, Matanuska Electric Association, Enstar, and the Mat-Su and Kenai Peninsula Boroughs.

Residents were asked to lower thermstats and hot water heaters and postpone washing dishes and clothes - steps they might be asked to take during extreme cold.

A gas crunch this winter in Southcentral is going to have a real impact on the cost of electricity in Fairbanks. If Chugach Electric, MEA, and ML&P have to reduce generation because of gas supply problems (most of the generators in Soutcentral run on natural gas), you can bet there won't be any cheap power heading north over the intertie.

As residents of Juneau discovered when their source of cheap hydro power was suddenly cut by a massive avalanche, the 5X price rise was a very effective method of reducing their energy consumption. Further proof that the wallet rules everything.

Saving 3 percent when it is warm? Makes you wonder, how much above the average usage of natural gas it is going to be when it gets cold? Nothing like chattering teeth to turn up the thermostat.
