FAIRBANKS — The Senate passed a bill Tuesday with nearly $336 million designated for Alaska military construction projects.

The bill contains about $198 million in projects for Fort Wainwright and about $13.35 million for Eielson Air Force Base construction.

Fort Wainwright’s funding will go toward the construction of four complexes, and Eielson’s money is reserved for taxiway lighting and arctic utilidors — corridors for utility, water and sewage lines.

Alaska Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich each voted for the bill, which was approved unanimously.

The $133.9 billion legislation sets aside roughly $44.7 billion for Veterans Affairs heath care in fiscal 2010, which starts Oct. 1.

That total includes $29 million for medial care for veterans in highly rural areas and $50 million to establish community-based outpatient clinics in areas “underserved by the VA,” according to a press release from Begich’s office.

Language in the bill helps the VA partner with Alaska Native health services, Murkowski stated in a press release. She stated that conversations with VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki have shown “the VA is finally getting serious about ensuring that our veterans who live off the road system are not disenfranchised from accessing their earned benefits.”

The bill will head to a conference committee to resolve differences between the versions passed by the House and the Senate.

This country is broke. These spending bills need to be pared down to what we can afford and no more. Spending for all things by the Feds needs to be cuts including the ones you favor.
