FAIRBANKS — Fairbanks’ Fred Meyer stores have sold more copies of Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue” than the company’s Anchorage sites, but the store in Palin’s hometown of Wasilla is the retailer’s best at selling the former Alaska governor’s memoir.

“The sales of Palin’s book are just rocking in Alaska,” Fred Meyer spokeswoman Melinda Merrill said.

Fred Meyer has 130 stores, and the 11 Alaska stores have sold 40 percent of the chain’s copies of “Going Rogue,” Merrill said.

“Nothing compares to Harry Potter, but she has a strong-selling hardcover book and has already outsold the last John Grisham novel, which was released in February,” Merrill said. “Grisham is usually a really big seller. ‘Going Rogue’ is a very popular book.”

Elsewhere in Fairbanks, the first-week sales of the Palin memoir at Barnes & Noble are on par with the popular “Twilight” series, the store’s manager said.

Locally owned Gulliver’s Books has sold 70 copies of “Going Rogue,” according to manager Maria Papp, who characterized Palin’s book sales there as “OK.”

By comparison, former Alaska Lt. Gov. Jack Coghill’s life story, “Growing up in Alaska,” sold about 100 copies within hours of its release last month, she said. Coghill held book signings at the store.

According to Nielsen Bookscan, a New York-based company that tracks book sales at major retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com and Costco, “Going Rogue” was the highest-selling book last week, beating the latest offerings by best-selling authors such as Stephen King and Dan Brown. Palin, the former GOP vice presidential contender, sold nearly half a million copies of her memoir in the days after its Nov. 16 release, according to Nielsen Bookscan. That’s not including sales at Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, BJ’s Wholesale Club and library purchases.

Publisher HarperCollins puts first-week book sales at 700,000 copies, according to The New York Times.

“Going Rogue” sold better its first week, according to Nielsen Bookscan, than “The Audacity of Hope” by President Obama, “Living History” by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and “Why Courage Matters” by U.S. Sen. John McCain, who made Palin a household name by choosing her as his running mate in last year’s presidential election.

Only President Clinton’s memoir, “My Life,” sold better its first week than Palin’s memoir, according to Nielsen Bookscan, which compared memoirs of current or past presidents along with vice presidential and presidential contenders published since 2002.

Fairbanks Barnes & Noble manager Eric Niewohner said Palin’s memoir was the best-selling book in the store last week and that he expects that to extend to this week.

“I knew this would be a big book, so I got plenty,” he said. “If you are a Sarah Palin fan, you are going to like it. If you’re not, you’re not.”

Papp, the manager at Gulliver’s, said her store has about 30 copies on its shelves and 50 more copies coming next week.

“They are trickling out,” she said. “I’ll be surprised if we sell much more than 100 copies. People are losing interest.”

An assistant manager reached at the Fairbanks Wal-Mart referred calls to the company’s Tennessee-based book distributor, whose offices were closed.

I'm not surprised at Palin's book sales, but I'm not sure the book itself will ultimately do her any favors. As John Tantillo pointed out on his blog, by focusing so much on the past (I think that about 1/2 the book covers the losing campaign), Palin sacrifices what was one of her (and Obama's) key assets: "forward motion."

For the Palin haters, this Jon Stewart video about sales of her book in nyc is really funny.

These book sales figures from competing retail outlets would be more meaningful if the prices for which they sell at each were also posted.

C'mon Terrence, you're fooling no one by hiding behind a anonymous handle pretending to be a Todd Larkin.

The fact that Gulliver's has sold 70 copies is eye opening. Considering Gulliver's clientele I would have guessed that they would have sold maybe a half dozen copies to non locals that didn't realize what geographical area in which they were shopping. It would not have surprised me if the book store had announced an official book burning in their parking lot. I did smell something getting hot yesterday afternoon, I guess it could have just been the manager blowing off steam as another copy of "Going Rogue" went out the door. First we had the UA Museum apologizing for and explaining why the museum was selling "Going Rogue" and now we have Gullivers using psychological censorship. Would you expect less from the "moving forward" ideology.

I think 'Going Rogue' is one of the best books I have read in a long time. In one minute I laugh, and in the next it brings tears. It is an emotional roller coaster. Good for Sarah. She should become a millionaire from this book and she and her family deserve it after the way the mainstream media trashed her and her family last fall. I normally support Democrats, but Sarah is an exception. She is truly one of the great people in this world. God Bless her.

And wow...how bitter does Papp sound about having to sell Palin's book at Gulliver's? Amanda loved the negativity so much that she couldn't keep it out of this article.

I'm not a fan of either Obama or Palin, aktrucido, but if you're going to post that link about Palin supporters, people have to see this one about Obama supporters.

Although the interview below is amusing, this is common of media on both sides. I did not see anything great from Obama supporters...

Judging by these videos, the whole country is stupid? We should stop voting and just let the better informed Zars take over full control, except that us "greatly informed Daily news miner commentators" should all be "assistant Zars" :P

Here's another that hits on "all" voters

www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=5985719&page=1 Video is mid page, Stossel in picture holding photos.

Nice link though Akbear' but how about meeting my challenge?

I've read the postings on Daily News Miner forums for months/years and some were amusing, some thoughtful, some idiocy and many clearly outrageous. I'm a new poster and am hoping to start a trend, actually more like issuing a challenge: delete your account and sign back up with your real name as your "handle". I'm curious to see (of the more inflammatory posters) who is really willing to stand behind their comments, good or bad.

I'm doubtful that many will do it but, I should at least ask and lead by example.

Best to all,

Todd

Yet another horrifying unjustified attack by the liberal media on Sarah! This is as horrific and unjustified as most stories about her.

Evidence of this is so blatant! ANY news story should have the sentence added “I am Sarah Palin and I approved this news story. Don’t get me started on Oprah! She broadcast a conversation with Sarah and it also did not have a Sarah approved message.

Gosh darn you liberal media elite!

The only thing that sold better was her. She sold out.
