FAIRBANKS — Two men who allegedly attempted to burglarize a Fairbanks home of marijuana were instead beaten by the home’s residents and arrested by police.

Wesley Scott Cruikshank, 21, of Fairbanks, and Benjamin Anthony Valles, 19, of North Pole, have each been charged with one count of first-degree burglary, a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Valles also has been charged with third-degree felony assault.

Fairbanks police were called to 516 Craig St. just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report that two men had broken into the home and were fighting with the residents. Valles allegedly brandished a handgun, and Cruikshank had a metal pry bar with him, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.

One of the residents told police that Valles pointed the gun at his head and demanded money. The gun was found to be a BB gun, Fairbanks police Lt. Tara Tippett said.

Cruikshank and Valles then attempted to pull one of the men out of the home and a fight ensued between them and three other men. When police arrived, Cruikshank and Valles were being restrained on the floor. Cruikshank was treated and released at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for minor injuries, Tippett said.

None of the residents face assault charges.

“They have the right to defend themselves and their own property, and because they were in their own property, they had no duty to retreat,” Tippett said.

Valles, who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of his arrest, told police that he and Cruikshank went to the home to steal four marijuana plants someone told them were being kept there, according to the complaint.

Police smelled marijuana in the home but did not locate any plants.

The men living in the Craig Street home told Fairbanks police that they had no prior relationship with Cruikshank or Valles. The incident does not appear to be gang-related, Tippett said.

Cruikshank has no prior felony record. Valles has no prior criminal history.

if you read the article carefully, you can tell it does not mean 'a home of marijuana' as in made of it, it means they tried to burglarize a home, and the target of the burglary was the plants. tool.

Deja-vu?

Wasn't this posted here a few days ago? I don't think Al Gore gives out carbon credits for recycled news.

I hate to nitpick but what is a 'home of marijuana'?

Oh Please, didn't you see Cheech and Chong? It is just like a "delivery truck" of marijuana. It is built entirely out of pot!!

Ahem, who should have "shown restraint"?

The cop who was doing his job, or- the person who committed matricide and then threatened a cop with a deadly blade?

Maybe if the two kids in this case had a blade and pistol instead of a piece of blunt metal and a bb-gun- things would have gotten more serious, however- these kids did not just commit, nor did they have any real intention of committing murder (else they would have brought a machete and 9mm instead of a tire iron and bb-gun).

If a person is dumb enough to play chicken with a train, and loses- do you punish the engineer? Maybe the railroad?

"Possession of pot in a greater offense, than breaking and entering,"

I think out local media is following the example of William Randolph Hearst lately.

REMEMBER ITS CALLED MURDER-WANA for a reason!

I sure hate to see a Cruikshank go bad. They're a good family.

These two geniuses are lucky they weren't killed at the scene.

What idiot takes a BB gun to a robbery in an area that is very 2nd Amendment supportive? Apparently this guy.

Not sure about the marijuana angle. State law allows for personal use within your own home via castle doctrine laws. If these to criminals chose to break into someone's home to steal their personal property then they made their choice.

It will be interesting to see the conclusion of this plea deal in the blotter.

Interesting that a few days ago there was a murder on Hess Avenue and the New-Miner reporter called it Hess St. Now we have this on the supposed Craig St. and there is no such place in Fairbanks - it's Craig Avenue.

I usually am not so picky, but please, get the street names correct.

This incident occuring the night before Thanksgiving, should give the victims the greatest reason to be Thankful that things turned out the way they did, in that no one died or was seriously injured. I am glad of the fact that in defending themselves the victims showed great restraint in not killing these individuals. With the presence of a weapon Deadly Force was Authorized. I hope that the Police follow this to the end and that the suspects in custody fully cooperate with them and give up any other individuals that may have been involved.

Never the less these rough guys are still cop callers. Should have saved everybody time and trouble and handled the situation themselves.

I know the men living at the location, and the two burglars were lucky not to sustain severe injuries even without a gun present, they are rough guys.
