FAIRBANKS - Amanda Coolley lives a relatively anonymous life in her hometown of Fairbanks, but she’s the newest reality television star in the Philippines.

The 25-year-old construction worker was crowned the winner of “Survivor Philippines” on Friday, according to the show’s Web site. For outlasting 15 other contestants, Coolley won 3 million pesos — the equivalent of about $64,000.

The West Valley High School graduate was marooned on the island of Palau for 39 days as part of the show, which is similar to the “Survivor” series that has aired in the United States for the past decade. One by one, contestants were eliminated through a series of competitions, all while scavenging for food and dueling against scheming competitors.

Coolley was named the winner following a vote by a jury of former contestants on Friday. She outdueled “Girl Next Door” Jef and “Transsexual Beauty Queen” Justine to collect the winning votes in the finale, according to www.survivorphilippines.tv.

A friend said Coolley and her family are still in the Philippines following the taping of the final show.

Coolley couldn’t be reached to comment on the finale, but she told the News-Miner last month that she was only slightly familiar with “Survivor” when she auditioned for the show while visiting the Philippines last summer. But her quirky background helped her land a spot after producers sifted through six rounds of auditions and thousands of potential candidates.

Her mother, Arceli, is from the Philippines, and her father, Lloyd, is American. She lived in the Philippines until age 16 and speaks a rural dialect of Tagalog, but she has lived in Alaska since her family moved to the state in 2000.

Because of that distinctive history, Coolley said her nickname on the show translated as “half-breed country girl.”
