FAIRBANKS — One of the most influential people in Tammie Wilson’s life was her grandmother, Willia Ebbler, a self-taught businesswoman and the backbone of her family’s appliance store in Illinois.
“When she arrived, she commanded a room,” Wilson said.
After Wilson turned 13, her grandmother began teaching her the principles of business, starting with how to balance the store’s books.
“Everything had to total up, and if it didn’t, you had to figure out why,” Wilson said. “She taught me about having integrity and honesty, and the customer is always first. It was always about the people.”
After Wilson graduated from Illinois State University, she helped with other family businesses and raised four children, home-schooling them. She dove into volunteer work when her family settled in Alaska in 2003, and last year she was elected to the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly.
On Nov. 3, the voters will decide whether to make her the borough mayor.
The 48-year-old registered Republican bills herself as a conservative interested in keeping government small, efficient and responsive to the people.
Wilson is a regular on local conservative talk radio. She leads the children’s worship at Bethel Church on Farmers Loop and is a former Girl Scout.
She skips lunch, talks about prayer, keeps her daily schedule in her head and promises to do her homework and get back to you if she can’t answer a question.
She is an expert at chit-chat and enjoys wisecracking.
“I was at a gun show last weekend,” Wilson said. “It was awesome. It was definitely my world.”
Her campaign is run out of her home off Badger Road and her green sedan. The Interior Alaska Conservative Coalition in the Northgate Square has opened its doors to Wilson, who keeps signs and pamphlets in the office and meets volunteers there.
Her campaign catchphrase is “the mayor for all of us.”
On a recent Wednesday, Wilson volunteered answering phones at KUAC during pledge week. The radio station broadcasts assembly meetings.
She appeared on “Problem Corner,” a show broadcast on KFAR-AM 660. Host Steve Floyd threw her softball questions and callers wished her well.
She attended the weekly roundtable discussion of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Association, a group dedicated to keeping public trails open to multiple uses.
If elected, Wilson said, she plans to seek the group’s advice on trails issues. Members include businessman Craig Compeau and former state legislator Hugh Fate.
At the conservative coalition offices, a poster board near the front entrance tracked the number of doors — 750 — knocked on behalf of Wilson. The goal was 5,000.
Handyman Todd Larkin soon arrived.
In 2002, Larkin helped Sarah Palin during her unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor. He was one of the people who went to Palin’s house in Wasilla and encouraged her to run for governor in 2006, he said. They parted ways following a dispute about her choice of campaign managers, he said. Three years ago, Larkin ran for borough mayor, losing to incumbent Jim Whitaker.
Larkin said he needed a break from politics but decided to help Wilson.
“She’s worked so hard that I feel like I have to reward effort,” said Larkin, who sees similarities between Wilson and Palin.
Wilson sat in a conference room at the conservative coalition and put rubber bands on pamphlets so they could be hung on doorknobs.
She explained her approach to running a municipality with more than 400 employees and a budget of more than of $100 million.
First, Wilson said, the borough budget is too high. On “The Michael Dukes Show” on KFAR 660 AM, she said she would seek efficiencies by eliminating part-time positions and pooling secretaries.
“I can’t know everything and I’m not going to pretend to,” she said.
Wilson spent a few years as a public schoolteacher before starting her family. She also has managed rental properties in Alaska and Illinois. The number of properties has varied. Currently, the assemblywoman and her husband, a journeyman millwright, own two rentals in Illinois and one in Alaska.
If elected, Wilson plans to seek input from experts and the public when making decisions, she said.
She thinks more problems should be solved at the neighborhood level without government interference.
“The government never does anything more efficiently than the people can do,” Wilson said. “I’ve learned more volunteering than any professional work I’ve had.”
Wilson, Larkin and coalition executive director Maria Rensel met at a church and began going door-to-door on Riverview Drive and nearby streets.
At one door, a shirtless man stepped outside to chat with the candidate about school district funding and the borough’s vehicle inspection and maintenance program, which is set to end on Dec. 31.
Wilson, unfazed by the shirtlessness, agreed with the man when he said any surplus money in the school district’s budget should go toward paying off bonds.
Later, Larkin brought up the outgoing mayor’s comment that Wilson’s opponent has a superior intellect. Wilson said the lame duck mayor’s opinion is unimportant to her.
“I’m thrilled he backed Luke,” she said. “I’ve heard what people think of him.”
A few people at their doors confessed they had supported Garry Hutchison, an accountant and former assemblyman who failed to gain enough votes to make it to the runoff. They said they now plan to vote for Wilson.
One woman hugged Wilson, kissed her cheek and thanked her for running for office.
“I think that we’ve been able to bring out that extra passion in people,” Wilson said.

I have something that been bothering me, are people of this ilk, undercover Wilson supporters? A fact is lampooning her hasn’t worked.
In fact the biggest thing it will accomplish is to make Wilson supporters more determined to go to the polls. You might as well prioritize getting their people to the polls.
Going by the assumption you do not want her to win, is giving extra motivation to her supporters really wise?
Remember turn out is KEY, to this election.
The debates were fair, and some people on either side in this thread have made good points. So all is not wasted
She needs to put her so-called education degree back in the crackerjack box where she found it.
Nights like tonight make it pretty clear why her campaign has been feverishly trying to suppress her.
You are Luke's best spokesman.
I heard a Luke add on the radio today. He said that the Borough needs someone with "a steady hand on the wheel". Ha, Luke thinks that the borough is a car. Or maybe the Borough actually has a wheel?
I am still voting for Tammie Wilson!
"...if you find her 'carpetbagging' disconcerting, you'll love this..."
Go back and re-read my post; I did not say I found her 'carpetbagging' disconcerting. I found the 'claims of carpetbagging' disconcerting. She's here now and she's seeking the post of Mayor. She may not get it but then again, there are enough people who like what she says that I think she just MIGHT win the election.
If she doesn't, I'll be disappointed but I will survive; yes, I will survive even Luke Hopkins. One of these days the people of this Borough will get tired of "More of the Same" Luke Hopkins. It happened to John McCain; he got 'labeled' as George Bush's Third Term in Office and that pushed Barack Obama over the top. The same could happen to Luke; do we really want 'another term' for Mayor Jim Whitacker? That would certainly be an indorsement wouldn't it?
Like a lot of folks of her stripe - certainly the folks Ms. Wilson is relying most heavily upon for her support and council, like the Interior Taliban - Ms. Wilson don't much care for "gub-ment" - don't trust it, don't like, don't think we (everybody but her and hers) should be "relyin' on it". And she put that "theory" into active practice at LOVE Inc:
Ms. Wilson thought Love Inc was too heavily reliant on federal grants for its funding. So what does Ms. Wilson do? Does she simply direct the organization not to apply for or accept anymore federal grants? Oh no no no - Ms. Wilson sets out to ensure that Love Inc CAN'T RECEIVE anymore federal grants: she actively goes out to turn an ailing yet serviceable service organization into one so dysfunctional and crippled that the feds won't allow it funds.
Guess what organization in Our Community also gets lots of federal money - to do things like pave the streets and fund the schools. That's right, the Borough "gub-ment". And guess what those federal funds help off-set. That's right, locally generated tax revenues.
Will pesky facts like that deter Ms. Wilson? Who knows. But what we can know is that Ms. Wilson has a proven record of putting her "theories" about gub-ment "into practice".
So, who's ready for three years of Ms. Wilson showin' the entire North Star Borough "The LOVE"?
Hi, this is Tammie!!!!
I came up here from Illinois six years ago because me and my family wanted to get dividend checks. We tried to get checks but were denied the first year or two because we didn't follow the rules. I then decided to get on the assembly because I could start collecting a government check. This spring I voted for a gold plated contract for borough employees that gives the most generous benefits in the world, including two months of paid time off, and two million in medical coverage and a state retirement.
I knew that if I became the borough mayor I COULD CASH IN AND EARN MORE MONEY THAN I HAVE EVER EARNED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I'll get over a third of a million dollars plus benefits from you dumb suckers over my first term. If I can sucker you into a second term I'll make two thirds of a million dollars!!! YIIIPPEE!!!
I'll pretend to be a "fiscal conservative" and you dumb rednecks will believe me. I really don't know how the government works even though I've been on the assembly for a year. I just hate it when people ask me basic questions and I don't have a clue. Oh well. Just show up and vote for me so I can begin my on the job training. I really do want to cash in with all those great benefits I voted for this summer.
Doug_in_Salcha, if you find her "carpetbagging" disconcerting, you'll love this -
B)Regarding Ms. Wilson's only tenuous connection to Our Community:
It doesn't matter if you're a Soulless Pinko Commie, Bleeding Heart Liberal, Progressive to Center-Right Centrist, Moderate Republican, Fiscal &/or Social Conservative or Tin-Foil Hat Wearing Far Right Wing-Nut - what unites us is that "we're all in this together" and have a vested interest in seeing Our Community Prosper - we've staked our claims here and put all our chips on the this here table.
Ms. Wilson has hedged her bets. Her most valuable properties - the only ones she can claim generate an income and aren't left vacant or littered with refuse & derelict vehicles - are in Illinois. Ms. Wilson herself is (aside from habitually campaigning for office and, currently, seeking to become the top-earner among those she seems to despise) chronically unemployed.
Her husband earns his income in out of state places like Washington and Wisconsin.
True Faith, said Charlie Boddie, isn't shown by the person who, without safety-net or cord, walks the high wire across the Grand Canyon pushing the wheel barrow, it's shown by the person who volunteers to sit IN the wheel barrow.
Ms. Wilson is neither - she's the smiling person wearing the Washinton/Wisconsin parachute and Illinois bungee tether telling Our Community to just trust her and hop in the barrow.
It's easy to be light-hearted when you're sitting at the table gamblin' with nothin' but someone else's money.
Ms. Wilson is the most "light-hearted" candidate around...
Wilson for Mayor
To the editor:
Before this October's local elections get too close, I'd like to stand back and strongly endorse Tammie Wilson for Borough Mayor.
Usually, the problems with politics lie in a politicians desire for power coupled with our desire for them to fix every problem under the sun (and for global warming alarmists – the sun...). This leads to political rhetoric and pandering. What we get is a government growing to such enormous proportions, that not a single person fully understands it.
In a democracy, we are response for the politicians we put into office as they are a reflection of us. I think Tammie Wilson will be a politician that we can be proud of. Wouldn't that be a pleasant change?
She is very realistic and very much so deserves to be called a “common sense conservative.” Small government is the only responsible route to take because as economist Milton Friedman, a Nobel laureate said, “there is no such thing as a free lunch.” She has demonstrated that she is not afraid to stand alone when need be. She and fellow Assembly member Joe Blanchard have been fighting for more honest budgets and it is about time she have more of a pulpit to implement those needed ideas. She is also opposed to a sales tax.
On the local level, forced annexation is the ultimate sign of greedy government statism. It shows a dangerous attitude towards property rights and the limits of government. On her website, she plainly states, “Annexation should only be done when local residents approach a municipality by a vote, not when a government desires to expand its tax base.”
When the News-Miner runs questions to her and the other candidates for borough mayor in the coming months, give her responses a close read. That is what I have always done and have consistently been impressed with how well informed and spoken she is. I will take substance and action over rhetoric and pandering any day of the week.
I'm going to vote for Tammie Wilson for Borough Mayor on October 6th and I don't think I'll regret it. Her website is www.tammiewilson.org/
Below is my criticism of the bleeding heart liberal Luke Hopkins.
I think Luke Hopkins is a good guy in his personal life, but don't think he'd be a wise pick for any political or leadership role.
He has been a poor assembly member. He has trouble making up his mind. He flip flipped on the bag tax 3 times. I find it amazing that he couldn't predict that Fairbanks would hate the bag tax. That shows that he is extremely out of touch. I guess he thinks we are San Francisco or Seattle of the north.
He has also been disingenuous in his campaign. He pretends to be a budget hawk, but he has happily stood by and promoted the growth of the borough budget just over these past few years that he's been on there by over $25 million!
He has also voted in support of creating "Trained Code Enforcement Officers" (borough cops) - which would obviously lead to bigger budgets and higher taxes, and supported and sponsored sales tax resolutions to be put on the ballot. I guess he is too cowardly to vote for the sales taxes he supports himself. Remember that sales tax we voted down back in 2007? There are so many we've voted down, they just kind of lump together. Thank Luke Hopkins for pushing the sales tax.
Luke is a good guy but would not be a wise choice. He seems a bit too like the people we've had before (and current have) that have gotten us into all these messes.
So if you don't mind sales taxes and bag taxes, Luke Hopkins is your liberal. If not, get Tammie Wilson in the Mayors office.
If you're really Garry's daughter why didn't you sign in under your real name like your mother has been doing?
Also, since you live in Anchorage, are you referring to your dad's supporters who also live in Anchorage? There are many of your dad's fans who live in Fairbanks and will be supporting Tammie.
I know what she means, but it creates several humorous visual images.
I’ve been in Alaska for 19 years (this time) and I spent 5 years at Fort Greely before retiring from Active Duty and returning to Alaska (for a total of 24 years in State). I know that this means I’m still a “Cheechako” in the eyes of many but it seems that most of the Conservatives echo the sentiment that I saw recently in an email from a friend about “What it means to be a Southerner”. I know I will never be “Alaska Born” but to paraphrase a line in the email, “Bless your heart, we know you got here as soon as you could…”
I wonder why ‘how long she’s been here’ it seems to of such importance to Liberals. When there is a ‘Liberal/Progressive’ who’s only been in Alaska for a short period of time, most Conservatives don’t really care how long he or she has been here; we only care what his or her politics are. What is it they want to do? What do they plan to do with the City / Borough Budget? Do they want to Raise Taxes? Do they want to hire more City / Borough Employees? Are they more interested in “finding other revenue streams” or in “reducing financial / budgetary waste”?
When the situation is reversed, the ‘Liberal/Progressive’ seems to be deeply and righteously concerned about the length of time the ‘newly arrived Conservative’ has been here. Could that be because of the lack of cohesion in their political platform? It seems Liberals would much rather argue about the Conservative’s Political Philosophy than engage in an honest “exchange of ideas” (as is ‘evidenced’ by Luke’s refusal last week to speak on Michael Dukes Radio Broadcast on KFAR).
Compare the difference:
For Tammy- A go get-em title...
Digging in to Tammie Wilson’s run for Fairbanks borough mayor.
First line of piece- is indicative of the piece. Positive words like backbone, businesswoman, influential.
One of the most influential people in Tammie Wilson’s life was her grandmother, Willia Ebbler, a self-taught businesswoman and the backbone of her family’s appliance store in Illinois.
Against Luke - negative title with "claims" and "room for debate"
Luke Hopkins’ TV ad claims leave room for debate
It is a critical piece, with no full color photos, or information about his most influential people in his life...
Seems like this stuff belongs on the editorial pages rather than the front page. Or is the News Miner openly endorsing Tammy?
How many of you have done your homework on Ms. Wilson? Have you looked up her property and those she manages? A very fair representation of the person she really is, not what she claims to be.
What you see is what you get!!!!!!!
Nope, you're right I'm not Hutch's spokesperson...I'm just his daughter. And know the majority of Hutch's supporters will NOT be voting for Tammie Wilson.
