HEALY — If write-in candidates don’t save the day, the Denali Borough Assembly might find itself taking over the job of the Denali Borough School Board.
Kristen Friesen of Healy is the only candidate who has announced plans to seek a position for Seat D on the school board. A certified teacher in Alaska, she works as an education specialist for Denali National Park and Preserve and the Murie Science and Learning Center.
The only candidate to officially file to run is Rick Hundrup, seeking Seat F. He is vice president of finance for Usibelli Coal Mine and spent many years on the school board years ago.
That leaves three vacant seats with no candidates: one in the west-central district and two seats in the north district.
The only contest in the Denali Borough Assembly race is for Seat F in the west-central district: Cyrus L. Cooper, a school board member, versus David W. Evans, a alumnus of the assembly.
Clay Walker is running unopposed and Robet Kohlsdorf also is running unopposed.
Precincts are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Anderson, Clear, Healy and near Denali at the McKinley Village Community Center.
There is no precinct open in Cantwell, because there are no candidate seats open for the assembly or school board from Cantwell.
Early voting is available at the borough office until
4 p.m. Monday.
