DELTA — More than $2,000 worth of hockey gear was stolen from the Liewer-Olmstead Hockey Rink in Delta Junction last weekend. Hardest hit was the visiting Su-Valley Rams hockey team, which had several pairs of hockey skates, helmets and gloves taken.
The Su-Valley coach said the theft could mean the “end of the season for them.”
Delta High School hockey coach Shannon Nichols said some of Delta’s hockey gear was bagged up and apparently ready to be wheeled out in the crime but something or someone interrupted and the bag was left behind.
Locks on the refrigerator and freezer in the upstairs concessions stand were broken. Food and supplies also were emptied from the storage areas, but none appeared to be stolen.
The Delta Husky hockey team was hosting the Su-Valley Rams with games scheduled for Friday night and Saturday morning.
Because of the thefts, the Saturday game was canceled and the Rams headed back to Talkeetna.
A skate-a-thon is planned for 4 p.m. Friday at the Liewer-Olmstead Hockey Rink to raise funds to help replace Su-Valley’s hockey equipment.
The Delta theft follows a recent report of a theft of about $3,000 of athletics equipment at Tri-Valley School in Healy. In that case, someone stole the girls basketball team uniforms and other basketball team items, including a scoreboard console, athletic tape, medical kits, microphones and agility ladder.
I hope they find the thief and the court order would be sentence to play Hockey with the team
for a period of six months.
