Former Fairbanks resident Martin Edward Kirk, 77, passed away May 9, 2008, in Wenatchee, Wash.
Ed was born June 2, 1930, in Wenatchee to Clarence L. and Orpha Ethel Kirk.
In 1949, he graduated from Milwaukie Union High School in Milwaukie, Ore. He attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., and graduated from the College of Great Falls in Great Falls, Mont., in 1984.
He married his first wife, Frances Joan Deverenex, in 1950 and seven children came from that union. Ed proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1976, with tours of duty in Newfoundland, Germany and Vietnam. After graduation from the College of Great Falls, he was employed with the Internal Revenue Service and moved to Fairbanks in 1984.
He married Mary Arbuckle in 1985 and several years later opened a tax preparation and accounting business until his retirement in November 2000. They moved to Wenatchee in 2004.
Ed was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, Voiture Nationale La Societe Des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, National Past Chef de Gare Club, AMVETS, National Association for Uniformed Services, Disabled American Veterans, Air Force Sergeants Association and the Retired Enlisted Association.
He was also a member of the Air Force Association (Inland Empire Chapter), Association of the United States Army, Interior Veterans Coalition of Alaska Inc., Greater Fairbanks Military Retiree Council, Wenatchee Central Lions, AARP, American Diabetes Association, American Military Society and Wenatchee Valley Senior Center.
Ed was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Kirk; his parents, Clarence Kirk and Ethel Milford; stepmother, Gertie Kirk; stepfather, A.J. Milford; former wife, Joan Kirk; and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Kirk; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Dolores and Robert and Gayle; his children and their spouses, Michele and Gary Fliginger, Lori and Tom Dutcher, Mary and Jim Terry, Timothy, Julie and Roy Back, Vikki and Pat Gilmore; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 15, at Telford’s Chapel of the Valley with Chaplain Scott Langager officiating. Concluding services and inurnment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Women’s Resource Center, American Diabetes Association or charity of choice.
