Thomas Edison opened the first coal-fired power plant, Pearl Street Station, more than 100 years ago. Today, the coal industry works hard and spends a lot of money telling you yesterday’s technology is clean and safe. In truth, coal is one of the most polluting sources of energy available.

During my college days at the University of Alaska in the early 1960s, I visited Whitehorse as a guest of a fellow Canadian student and noticed that Fairbanks and Whitehorse were very similar in overall appearance in the downtown and also surrounding areas.
