Jan. 11, 1999 — Scott Lenord, 14, a Boy Scout with the Midnight Sun Council Troop 10, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He was presented scouting’s highest award at an Eagle Court of Honor at the First United Methodist Church.

He is the son of Michael and Sharon Lenord and a freshman at Lathrop High School

Scott’s original Eagle Project was to clear a trail from the 5K ski trail at Twin Bears Camp to the top of the hill. He planned the project with Mike Lee, a Twin Bears board member.

Jan. 11, 1984 — Living in Barrow for four years means eating a lot, according to Beth Laursen.

Her husband, Gary, was assistant director for science at the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory there, and Beth worked for the school district, so there were lots of potlucks and gatherings among friends and fellow employees.

“You make your own entertainment, so cooking was one of those things to do,” Beth said. “When you get together, you eat.”

Jan. 11, 1959 — Police officer Bob Nearing could hardly believe his eyes when at 3:30 a.m. yesterday he spotted two men sleeping peacefully on the snow-covered ice of the Chena, back of the USO Club.

“What’re you guys doing down here in weather like this?” he asked as he awakened Harold Griffin and Jack Moore of the Polaris Building.

“We’re just making good on a bet that we could sleep comfortably out here on the ice in our sleeping bags,” Griffin told the astonished policeman.

“So well,” said Nearing as he shrugged his shoulders and trudged back to the patrol car through the snow. He checked headquarters and found there was no law against sleeping on the Chena River ice or any other ice if a person was so inclined, even at 35 degrees below zero.

Jan. 11, 1934 — Fairbanks attorneys threw out a challenge to the dentists of this city. They figure they can beat the “tooth extractors” in a game of Curlers.

The dentists accepted the challenge from “the bar,” and it promises to be some game.

“The challengers have been practicing too long at the bar to beat us young fellows,” said one of the dentists.

Following is the lineup: Attorneys — Judge E. Coke Hill, District Attorney Ralph Rivers, Julien A. Hurley and Harry Pratt; Dentists — L.L. Hufman, H.A. Blyth, Stanley K. Jorgensen and H. Quist.

Brought back good memories to read about Bob.
    Gone, but not forgotten.
