Lathrop cagers take two from West Valley

Published Sunday, January 11, 2009

FAIRBANKS — The Lathrop girls pulled out a thrilling 56-54 victory over West Valley to cap a great final day of the Golden Heart Classic high school basketball tournament Saturday night at Lathrop.

It capped a fantastic day of prep hoops action that saw the Kodiak girls down Sitka in triple-overtime; and the Lathrop boys raced to a 78-49 win over West Valley.

The Lathrop girls rallied from a first-half deficit to take the lead in the third quarter and then held off a strong Wolfpack rally down the stretch to claim the win and finish the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.

West Valley finished the tourney at 1-2.

Lathrop trailed 19-13 at the end of the first quarter and 29-27 at the break. The Malemutes surged into the lead by outscoring West Valley 17-9 in the third quarter.

Ja’nae Anderson scored 17 points for the Malemutes, while Kaitlyn Hull dropped in 15 and Allysha Lewis added nine.

Katie Oates led West Valley with 15 points. Allyssa Miller tallied 12, with Erica Veazey and Shelby Barton contributing nine apiece.

Lathrop boys roll

The Lathrop boys came out on fire and never let up in racing to a 78-49 nonconference victory over cross-town rival West Valley.

The Malemutes raced out to a 31-6 lead in the first quarter and the game was never in doubt after that. Lathrop led 53-21 at halftime.

Nathan Wilson scored eight points in the first quarter and finished with a game-high 23 tallies. He nailed three 3-pointers, including two in the second quarter when he scored eight more points.

Kris Beal had eight first-quarter points en route to a 19-point night. Gralin Parker also scored eight of his 16 points in the opening eight minutes.

Ken Sample was the only West Valley player to score in double figures with 10 points. Seven of those points came in the fourth quarter when West Valley outscored Lathrop 24-21. Ealum Howe registered eight in a losing cause.

Lathrop plays at Hutchison on Tuesday, while West Valley travels to Eielson.

Kodiak prevails

The Kodiak girls finished the round-robin tournament with a 2-1 record after outlasting the Sitka Wolves in triple overtime, 40-35.

The regulation game ended tied at 25. Each team scored two points in the first overtime and four in the second. Kodiak finally pulled away in the third overtime, outscoring Sitka by a 9-4 margin.

Emily Garner had four of her six points in the second overtime to help the Bears break away. Joanna Garcia led the Bears with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Justine Chapman topped Sitka with 10 points and Karimae Carlson added nine in a losing cause.

Large crowd anxious to see some high school basketball.
    Refreshing to see.
    The Sitka/Kodiak game...really good.
Triple overtime games..even low scoring ones are always thrilling.
The Lathrop/West Valley girls game went pretty much as scripted.
No love lost between the two, and West looking to avenge last season's loss that cost them a trip to State.
Games between those two teams will be close each time they take the court this year.
My eyes almost popped out watching Kaitlyn Hull lead Lathrop. Much more aggressive in her senior year.
Very deserving of that tournament MVP award.
Junior Ja'nae Anderson is much improved from last season as well.
Katie Oates is West's leader hands down, but Shelby Barton and Jasmine Yarde, when they're both clicking with Oates can make the Lady Pack dangerous.
And after a forgettable first quarter in which the word fear was an understatement, the West Valley boys decided they wanted to play basketball, and made a respectable showing. Especially in the second half.
Watching Monroe's Michael Stepovich mature into a very good basketball player has been wonderful.
And Tuesday night, I get my first look at this loaded Hutchison squad as they take on Lathrop.
Love my boys Cole Daniel, Bryant Palm, Kevin Rima, Keenan Mayes, Rueben Pike and Ben "Big Red" Snow.
Out at Eielson, Colten Growden, Mr. Fearon...and that little "waterbug" Devante Sparrow (love watching that kid) make the boys lethal. And it seems like only last summer I coached 8th grade Sharee Miller at a UAF Team Camp.
She and Brittany Anderson make the Lady Ravens hard to deal with.
And finally at North Pole....glad to see Jazmin McNeal back...and for the boys...Jessie Ward is back in Kevin McHenry's fold.
There is some really good high school talent locally in both boys and girls high school basketball.
    Looking forward to watching....groaning....yelling, cheering...etc.
