Lathrop girls notch victory against Sitka

FAIRBANKS — Three players scored in double figures Friday night as the Lathrop Malemutes downed the Sitka Wolves 46-35 to highlight the second day of play in the Golden Heart Classic girls high school basketball tournament at Lathrop.
In the other game of the round-robin tournament on Friday, the Kodiak Bears downed the West Valley Wolfpack 38-36.
The tournament concludes today with Sitka playing Kodiak at 4:30 p.m., the West Valley boys taking on Lathrop at 6 p.m. and the West Valley girls going up against the Malemutes at 7:30 p.m.
The Lathrop girls used a big second quarter to take control of their game against Sitka.
After taking a 13-10 lead in the first quarter, the Malemutes outscored the Wolves 13-4 in the second and never looked back.
Allysha Lewis led the Malemutes’ offensive attack with 18 points. Six of those helped Lathrop get off to a fast start in the first quarter. She added eight more in the fourth to help the Malemutes seal the verdict. Ja’nae Anderson added 14 points for the Malemutes and Katilyn Hull registered 10, including a pair of 3-pointers. Anderson had two buckets each in the first, second and third quarters.
Justin Chapman led a balanced Sitka attack with nine points. Leisha Traim and Karimae Carlson chipped in seven points apiece.
Kodiak jumped out to a 14-6 lead over West Valley and then held off the Wolfpack in the fourth quarter to claim a two-point victory.
West Valley outscored Kodiak 11-8 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t pull out the win at the end.
Kodiak got 10 points from Joanna Garcia and eight each from Emily Garner and Betsie McCarty, who nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Bears come firing out of the gate. Garcia also nailed a 3-pointer in the first quarter.
Katie Oates hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 10 points for West Valley. Shelby Barton added six points, while Alyssa Miller and Erica Veazey chipped in five apiece.
Lathrop heads into the final day of the tournament with a 2-0 record, while Kodiak and West Valley are 1-1 and Sitka is 0-2.
