Third Day delivers message of faith

Published Friday, January 9, 2009

FAIRBANKS — Third Day is on the way to Fairbanks.

The Georgia-based Christian rock band will perform at the Carlson Center tonight, bringing with it an impressive musical resume. According to their label, Essential Records, Third Day has claimed 23 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, three Grammy Awards and two consecutive American Music Awards.

That helped attract some extra talent to their 10th studio album, “Revelation,” which was released last July. Musicians like Chris Daughtry, steel guitarist Robert Randolph, and Flyleaf’s Lacey Mosley are featured on the album.

Third Day claims diverse influences, including the Southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd and artists like U2 and Rich Mullins.

The band takes pride in presenting music that shows the complexities of Christian faith, according to a press release.

Lead vocalist and songwriter Mac Powell said he attempts to write songs with messages that “are like musical stepping stones on the band’s personal journey.”

“When you get older in faith, you don’t necessarily have fewer questions,” he said. “I used to get mad at myself when I’d have questions about my faith, but I’ve learned through the years that God has answered so many of those.”

The band also credits a change of scenery for inserting new chemistry into “Revelation.” It was recorded in Charlottesville, Va., instead of their hometown of Atlanta.

“By not really being able to look at our watches, it was just a productive time for us to be focused and I really feel like we got the results we needed,” said bassist Tai Anderson. “This is a new statement of who Third Day is.”
