FAIRBANKS — The host Lathrop Malemutes and West Valley Wolfpack girls basketball teams got off to winning starts in the abbreviated Golden Heart high school basketball tournament on Thursday evening.
The Malemutes edged the Kodiak Bears, 37-29, and the Wolfpack posted a 37-32 win over the Sitka Wolves.
The tournament was also supposed to feature four boys teams — Lathrop, West Valley, Glennallen and the Lathrop junior varsity, but when the Glennallen Panthers couldn’t make it to Fairbanks the boys bracket was reduced to just one game between Lathrop and West Valley. That will be played at 7:30 Saturday night.
Today’s girls games feature West Valley against Kodiak at 4:30 p.m. and Lathrop against Sitka at 6 p.m.
