FAIRBANKS — Fire badly damaged a cabin in Delta Junction early Saturday morning. No one was hurt, said Ted Hamilton, chief of Rural Deltana Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters from the volunteer department, the Army’s Fort Greely fire department and the city of Delta Junction fire department responded to fight the blaze at about 4:30 a.m., Hamilton said. The fire, which looks to have started in the chimney of a wood stove, he said, scorched the cabin’s interior but left the structure standing.
The cabin sits at milepost 269.5 of the Richardson Highway in the city of Delta Junction, Hamilton said. The stove was on the cabin’s first floor, and the occupants were sleeping in the basement, he said.
Because of the fire, the occupants unable to use the stairs to get to the front door. According to the owners, they had bought the property a little more than a year ago and installed emergency egress windows in the basement where the bedrooms are located. They exited the cabin through the egress windows. “They had an emergency exit, and they got out alright, so they were real lucky,” Hamilton said.
The temperature was 52 below in the area when the call was received.
Michael Paschall of the Delta Wind contributed to this report.
