Icebreakers split games; to play for title

Published Sunday, September 28, 2008

FAIRBANKS — The Alaska Icebreakers split a pair of games Saturday, and that was good enough to get them into the championship game of the Anaheim Fall Classic girls ice hockey tournament.

The Fairbanks team opened the day with a 7-1 victory over the Phoenix Lady Coyotes. In the second game, the Icebreakers dropped a 2-1 decision against the host Anaheim Lady Ducks.

The Icebreakers will get another shot at the Ducks in today’s championship game.

“We played two very good games today and we’re looking forward to the championship game tomorrow,” Icebreakers coach Jayson Kowalchuk said Saturday evening. “The two teams are very evenly matched.”

Whitney Wivoda and Rackell Kowalchuk each scored two goals in the Icebreakers’ win over Phoenix. Zoe Kurth, Gus Gillitzer and Kayla Parsons also had goals.

Kurth, Dayna Colang and Kiana Nauheim each had a pair of assists, while Gillitzer, Parsons and Amber Yates each had one helper.

Goaltender Katrina Lydon stopped 15 shots. The Icebreakers had 25 shots on goal.

The Icebreakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Lady Ducks, but couldn’t maintain the momentum.

Kowalchuk scored the goal that was assisted by Kurth and Kate Burns.

Lydon made 25 saves on the day. The Icebreakers registered 22 shots on goal.
