Alaska Buddhist

Center

Alaska Buddhist Center —Rimay Tenszin Ling is sponsoring the visit of Tibetan scholar lama Yeshi Tulku Rinpoche, which includes a weekend workshop and several talks. A highly revered scholar, representing all five schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and author, Yeshi Tulku lives in Seattle and teaches at the North American headquarters for the Sakya order. Tonight at 7, Yeshi Tulku will conduct an ancient blessing and empowerment ceremony, Ganapati, which is open to the public. A Saturday and Sunday workshop (bring food for potluck luncheon) features “Spiritual Practice in Everyday Life,” The lama’s topics will range from learning to watch the mind to using special techniques to overcome negative states of mind and emotions and to develop understanding of self and others. Following the workshop at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Yeshi Tulku will offer a refuge ceremony. All of the above will take place at the Four Winds Foundation. Additionally, on Saturday, the lama will be guest speaker at 5 p.m. at the Cold Mountain Zen Center’s “Change Your Mind Day,” at the Unitarian Church. His topic is “Insights into Tibetan Buddhism.” On Monday, at 6:30 p.m., the lama will speak on “Transforming Obstacles to Opportunities” at the Unitarian Church, 4448 Pike’s Landing Road. There is no charge for any of the events. ABC-RTL meets weekly Mondays and Wednesdays at the Unitarian Church at 5:30 p.m. for meditation. Call to Action

Call to Action Alaska will sponsor a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wood Center Ballroom on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Guest speaker Nicole Sotelo joins two Alaskans trained in Catholic teaching to answer questions on “Leadership in the Catholic Church, Past, Present and Future.” Sotelo speaks on “Women in Catholic Leadership: Looking at the Past, Looking to the Future” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Noel Wien Library auditorium. Zion Lutheran Church, 2982 Davis Road, hosts Saturday Nite Alive Contemporary at 5, traditional worship at 8:30 a.m. and contemporary worship at 11 a.m. Holy Communion is celebrated at all services, and nursery is available. Education hour for all ages is 9:45-10:45 a.m. The theme is “It’s All About Jesus — Follow Me” with Pastor Baumgarten’s sermon, “Who’s In Charge Here?” based on Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32; Philippians 2:1-18 and Matthew 21:23-32. During Wednesday education nights, the buffet dinner is from 5:30-6:15 p.m. ($3 per person), followed by Confirmation, fellowship and Bible study for all ages.
