Anchorage police investigate 'suspicious' death

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Anchorage police are investigating what they say is the suspicious death of a 39-year-old man.

Police say Darrell Kalmakoff of Chignik Lake died early Wednesday morning after he stopped breathing during a drinking party at an apartment in Anchorage's midtown area.

Lt. Paul Honeman says Kalmakoff was on the floor of the apartment, apparently passed out, when others at the party noticed he had stopped snoring and called police.

Honeman says Kalmakoff was dead by the time paramedics arrived.

Honeman says there were no obvious signs of trauma, but people in the apartment gave conflicting accounts, so police are treating the death as a homicide.
