Fortymile Caribou Herd hunt ends

Published Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Hunting for Fortymile caribou is officially closed as of today.

The Department of Fish and Game closed hunting in the last of three fall Fortymile caribou hunts at 11:59 p.m. Monday because hunters were expected to reach the harvest quota of 160 animals.

The state shut down the other two fall Fortymile hunts along the Steese and Taylor highways last month because hunters had reached the harvest quotas in those areas — 290 and 190, respectively. The season for non-residents closed Saturday, and the resident season was scheduled to be open through Sept. 30.

The area that closed Monday includes parts of units 20B, 20D, 20E and 25C. The area is accessible mainly by airplane or by boat via the Salcha River.

The federal subsistence hunts in all three Fortymile hunts are also closed.

The total harvest quota for the fall Fortymile hunts is 640 caribou. Harvest totals for each hunt area were not available Monday afternoon.

    About caribou-

What I want to know is, what happened to the Point Hope caribou "hunt?"

Has it been swept under the rug as so many of us predicted?
    Is it even being investigated?
Did the villagers ever cough up any info?

What the heck happened to that story?

uhhh, who in Point Hope is running for Vice-President of the United States?

really mntman? "we all know what happened" if you're such an expert and apparently an eye-witness to whatever happened in Point Hope why don't you elaborate? (along with corinne)

Obviously you people are still only interested in badmouthing people for something neither of you (corinne/mntman) know anything about besides whatever fantasies you two come up with in your own little brains, obviously you both know nothing otherwise you wouldn't be asking/commenting about it......

Try and use your little brains to look up the info YOURSELVES, if those caribou were SOOOOOOO important to you.

So LostAlaskan99712, you are just going to give those people in Point Hope a "free pass" just because of race?? That is racist!! I dont like to comment on these issues very much, and know that one must tread very lightly when doing so, but hey, if something is racist, it doesnt matter whom is making the comment. There should be prosecutions from that slaughter, no matter whom committed it.

hmm, uhh where exactly did I write they should have a "free pass"?

    Oh, that's right I didn't.

I have always maintained that the perpetrators of the slaughter of Caribou at Point Hope should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law......how is that "racist" or "giving them a free pass" now?

Oh, right, because I speak out against people who are only interested in badmouthing natives and try to DISGUISE it as "concern for caribou".

Calling me racist is about as stupid as calling every native a "drunk".
