Begich faces fine in APOC complaint

Published Monday, September 15, 2008

ANCHORAGE — The staff of the Alaska Public Offices Commission is recommending a $1,420 fine against U.S. Senate candidate Mark Begich for submitting an incomplete state financial disclosure report.

The recommendation stems from a complaint filed against Begich, the Democratic mayor of Anchorage, in late July by state Republican party spokesman McHugh Pierre.

According to the APOC staff findings, the state form submitted by Begich as mayor failed to include some income and assets listed on his federal disclosure report form that’s required as a Senate candidate.

Begich says he corrected all “reporting errors” and will promptly pay any penalties the commission deems warranted.

Begich faces U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens in the November election. Stevens, the Senate’s longest serving Republican, faces trial in Washington, D.C., next week, accused of lying in Senate disclosure records about hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and home renovations he received from VECO Corp.

Or there was unethical action by Mr. Begich. Always a possibility, even though we all know Democrats don't engage in anything unethical...ever.
