Coast Guard suspends search for Southeast Alaska fisherman

Published Sunday, September 14, 2008

JUNEAU -- The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a 52-year-old Petersburg man missing on a commercial fishing trip.

Thomas Lewis failed to return Thursday from a three-day trip in Frederick Sound. He was reported missing Friday.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Sitka found his boat, Hurricane, aground on Cape Fanshaw.

The engines were running. Fish on board had not been cleaned and had spoiled.

No entries had been made into the vessel's navigation system and laptop computer after 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Air and ground teams could not find Lewis. The Coast Guard says 1,472 nautical miles were searched.
