Officials: Northward fire caused by heart attack victim
Published Friday, September 12, 2008
FAIRBANKS — Authorities now believe they know what caused one floor of the Northward Building to fill with smoke last month and how one resident died.
An autopsy for Joyce E. Jones, 62, who was found dead in her room after firefighters were called to the building on the night of Aug. 5, revealed that the Northward resident likely died of a heart attack.
Investigators now believe that Jones suffered the fatal heart attack while cooking. The unattended food began to burn, setting off a smoke detector and alerting local fire departments.
Firefighters did not find an actual fire in the building, only thick smoke, though tenants were evacuated as a precaution.
Police and fire officials have been unable to locate and notify a next of kin for Jones. Anyone who knows a next of kin is asked to call the Fairbanks police department at 450-6500.

I hope that next of kin are found. How sad to die alone.
How odd to release her name before locating the next of kin. The newspaper is a lousy way to find out your loved one has passed. Condolences to all involved.
I think Sarah should be informed of this and fire the guy who released the name! This is just not right!
I think once they've been unable to locate a next of kin for a certain length of time they are allowed to release the name to aid in searching.
This sounds like it was truly an accident, and while I'm sorry that this woman passed away I am also glad that the fire did not spread.
