FAIRBANKS -- Thanks to lobbying by the Fairbanks Convention and Visitors Bureau, the northern section of the Parks Highway has been designated a state scenic byway.
The section of the Parks from Healy to Fairbanks received the label Wednesday from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. A lower section of the Parks Highway, from Healy to the south end of Denali State Park, has been designated as a state scenic byway for the last decade.
The designation makes the route eligible for grant funding to “enhance and promote the byway’s special qualities,” according to a press release from DOT.
The effort to designate the road as a scenic byway was led by Deb Hickok, executive director of the FCVB, the release said. The application was endorsed unanimously by representatives from five state agencies.
