Sept. 8, 1998 — Fort Wainwright would get $24 million and Eielson Air Force Base $17 million for construction projects under a federal funding package awaiting President Clinton’s signature.

That is part of $88 million in Alaska military construction appropriations approved last Tuesday by the U.S. Senate, according to Sen. Ted Stevens.

The largest local project is at Fort Wainwright, where $19.5 million is earmarked for barracks improvements. Fort Wainwright also would receive $3.1 million for its central vehicle wash facility.

An additional $1.5 million is allocated for Fort Wainwright to construct a coal car preheating facility. Stevens said in a prepared release that the money would increase safety and efficiency of that operation, in which coal at the central heating and power plant freezes in the winter, making handling difficult.

Sept. 8, 1983 — A second firm has expressed an interest in building a $30 million luxury hotel on the former bar block between First and Second avenues and Cushman and Lacey streets, Woody Maggard, executive director of the Fairbanks Development Authority said Wednesday.

Maggard did not reveal the identity of the second firm which might be interested in developing the property, but indicated it was an American corporation whose representatives had been in contact by phone.

“They’re supposed to be writing a letter to our chairman, Ray Kohler,” Maggard said.

Sept. 8, 1958 — A body, believed to be that of Raymond Monesano, a Salcha River miner who has been missing since April 30, was found in the river Saturday afternoon by two hunters, Territorial Police reported this morning.

One of the hunters, Richard Simpkins, went with Territorial Police this morning to recover the body from where it rests in the stream about 45 miles east of the Richardson Highway and 20 miles below the No Grub Mine that Montesno left from in a skiff on his way to Fairbanks.

Sept. 8, 1933 — Establishment of an Interior Alaska reindeer industry, with its shipping point and chief business center at Fairbanks, was discussed last evening at the regular meeting of the board of directors of the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce. The proposal received unanimous endorsement.

Another matter of general interest to be given consideration and approval was the building of a road between this city and Chena Hot Springs.
