Aas, Coulter lead charge up Ester Dome
Published Sunday, September 7, 2008
FAIRBANKS — Harald Aas and Anna Coulter are more than just a couple. They can also each run fast up relentless Ester Dome Road.
Aas, a Univeristy of Alaska Fairbanks graduate student and former Nanooks runner, logged the third fastest time ever in the Alaska Nanooks Ester Dome 5K on Saturday morning. His mark of 22 minutes, 54 seconds was just seven seconds shy of the record set a year ago by Marius Korthauer.
Current Nanooks filled out the next six spots among 30 male runners, led by Chris Eversman (24:06) and followed by Mitch Chandler (24:10), Matt Scerbak (24:25), Einar Often (24:45), Ray Sabo (24:48) and Oyvind Watterdal (24:52).
For the women, Coulter shaved 56 seconds off her winning time from 2007, finishing in 27:05 to register the seventh fastest-ever women’s time. Twin sister Julia Pierson was next in 27:23, the eighth fastest time in history.
Freshman Theresia Schnurr was third in 28:59, followed by Melissa Lewis in 29:42 and Elisabeth Habermann in 30:03.
The course started at the corner of Ester Dome and St. Patrick roads and followed Ester Dome Road to the Equinox Marathon “chute” parking lot near the top.
Complete results are in the Scoreboard, page C2.
The Nanooks next travel to Selah, Wash., for the Apple Ridge Run on Sept. 13.

The second bib pickup and spaghetti feed, also at the Pump House, will be from 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 19. The cost increases to $50.
The Equinox Marathon begins at 8 a.m. on Sept. 20.
Running movie
The bad news is that both screenings of the running documentary Spirit of the Marathon on Monday at the Blue Loon have sold out.
The good news is that additional screenings have been scheduled for 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Sept. 15.
The event is a fundraiser for the Team-in-Training (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society). Tickets are $10 and available at Beaver Sports, Toy Quest or by calling 590-2868.
The film (www.marathonmovie.com) is only being shown in special screenings and not in theaters nationwide.
