Anchorage prepares for opening of new civic center

ANCHORAGE -- The city of Anchorage is preparing for the opening of its new civic center.

The $111 million facility is expected to hold its grand opening in mid-October, where there will be entertainment and a street fair.

The city plans to hold a soft opening on Sept. 18 as part of the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau. Preview tours will be held then.

Anchorage residents in 2006 voted to fund the new center with an increase in the city's hotel-room tax. The tax went from 8 percent to 12 percent.

The new center is called the Dena'ina Convention Center.
