Oct. 12, 1998 — Cold weather is a hot topic in Alaska and the Delta Chamber of Commerce has figured out how to make it a profitable one.
Go ahead, plop down your $2 and take a chance in the third annual Delta Deep Freeze Classic. When do you think the thermometer will bottom out in Delta Junction this winter?
Guess right and you could be a few thousand dollars richer — or maybe a lot more, depending how Alaskans warm up to the contest. The Delta Chamber of Commerce is banking on it.
Oct. 12, 1983 — A weekly culture class is not enough for some Native prisoners at the Fairbanks Correctional Facility, who say they want more freedom in the prison to practice their culture and religion. They want to be officially recognized as an Alaska Native Culture Group.
But jail officials think the group is more interested in establishing a power base, which would concentrate on changing jail policies rather than culture. They think the Monday night classes are sufficient.
Jail officials worry the group would destroy the relaxed atmosphere between staff members and prisoners.
Oct. 12, 1958 — The season’s first major snowfall was blanketing the countryside with a feathery whiteness today.
The storm was to continue, with less intensity, into the afternoon.
Oct. 12, 1933 — After presentation of the musical comedy, “It’s The Girl,” next Saturday evening at Moose Hall, the hall will be cleared for ballroom dancing, in which the players and audience will mingle for a gay time.
The entire cost is only $1.
