Oct. 11, 1998 — Worried about vanishing river access and a loss of public space, residents unloaded a list of concerns Saturday on would-be developers of a central downtown block.

About 40 people gathered for a forum on the square’s future questioned the private developer’s vague plans for city-owned property between First and Second avenues immediately east of Cushman Street.

Oct. 11, 1983 — Twenty-two confirmed cases of salmonella or food poisoning in Fairbanks during the past three weeks has led to a formal investigation by two state agencies into the possible sources, but as yet there are no conclusive findings.

In addition, several dozen patrons of a local restaurant reportedly became ill last Tuesday and Wednesday but investigators have not determined the cause of that illness or if it was salmonella.

Personnel involved in the investigations said today the general public should not be unduly alarmed.

Oct. 11, 1958 — C.M. (Jim) Binkley, Fairbanks candidate for state senator at large, was elected chairman of the Russian Central Division convention meeting in Fairbanks today. Mrs. Paul Haggland was named as secretary, and George King of Boundary was voted sergeant at arms.

Henry Benson, long-time territorial commissioner of labor and current GOP candidate for U.S. Congress, was scheduled to give the keynote address. More than 30 delegates were present, representing a new central political division running from Barter Island to the mouth of the Kuskokwim.

The main business of the get-together will be to elect 17 delegates to the state GOP convention and an equal number of alternates. No date has been set for the Alaska-wide meeting, but it will be after this fall’s elections.

Oct. 11, 1933 — Creation of a waterway near Weeks Field to accommodate pontoon-equipped planes and application for federal funds for Chena River Flood Control received the attention of the City Council at its regular meeting last night.

The matter of a waterway for use of pontoon planes was brought up by Mayor Arnold M. Nordale.
