Interior netters reach semifinals at state tourney

FAIRBANKS — Interior tennis players are represented in the semifinals of all five divisions of the Alaska School Activities Association State High School Tennis Tournament heading into the final day of the two-day competition in Anchorage.
Monroe Catholic’s Eric Ringstad and Lathrop’s Sean Sullivan advanced to the boys singles semifinals by winning two matches apiece.
Ringstad, seeded fourth in the tournament, posted a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Juneau’s Nathan Graves in the Round of 16 and then beat East Anchorage’s Kyle Cox 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
The unseeded Sullivan downed Eagle River’s Paul McDonogh 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and second-seeded Cal McKim of South Anchorage 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Lathrop’s fourth-seeded Mackenzie Calvillo also posted a pair of wins in the girls singles event. She defeated Dimond’s Mimi Ahn 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and Bartlett’s Jennifer Mitchell 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
West Valley’s Caitlin Deutsch won her first-round match over Katie Fogg of Eagle River, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, but lost in the quarterfinals to No. 1 Emma Lewis of South Anchorage, 6-1, 6-0.
West Valley’s girls and boys doubles teams each won two matches, to advance to the semifinals.
Forest Owen and Ken Sample dominated their opponents, defeating South’s Nathan Bataille and Sean Holmes, 6-3, 6-0, in the first round, and knocking off Kodiak’s Nick Edmunds and Jake Powell in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0.
Loni Ellsworth and Aurora Roth came up with two big wins for the Wolfpack in girls doubles, beating Chugiak’s Megan Stahl and Robin Standley 6-3, 6-4, in the first round, and downing West Anchorage’s Sofiya Kostareva and Madeline Woodard in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2.
Lathrop’s Becca Gryder and Drew Lanning reached the semifinals of the mixed doubles competition.
The second-seeded Lathrop duo, notched a hard-fought 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Dimond’s Elena Coe and Bryce Monaco, and then had a much easier 6-0, 6-2 win over Bartlett’s Christian Cecil and Jessica Weeks in the quarterfinals.
West Anchorage has a commanding lead in the team standings with 27 points.
There’s quite a battle for the runner-up spot, as six teams are within three points of each other. Lathrop, South Anchorage and East Anchorage have 18 points apiece, followed by Juneau-Douglas with 17, West Valley with 16 and Service with 15.
Monroe Catholic and Hutchison each scored six points on Friday, while North Pole and Eielson did not score. Teams received three points for a win in the first round and quarterfinals and one point for a consolation-round win.
The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 8:30 this morning at the Alaska Club North in Anchorage.
