Oct. 10, 1998 — North Pole Mayor Tim Peters on Friday issued his official response to five allegations listed on a ballot measure seeking to oust him from office.

“The truth is right there laid out as true as a bill,” Peter said Friday afternoon. He hopes voters see that when they read his statement on Election Day.

A recall petition aimed at Peters was certified Sept. 8. The petition contained 134 valid signatures of registered voters. Recall organizers were required to gather 101 signatures — 25 percent of the votes casted in the last mayoral election — to get the question on the ballot.

Oct. 10, 1983 — A welder who was apparently doing repair work on an empty gasoline and oil tanker was killed Saturday afternoon in an explosion so intense that a fire official who lived nearby thought a plane had crashed.

The blast at C and S Welding also injured several others, including a firefighter who was hit by a minor explosion while fighting the fire.

Oct. 10, 1958 — One year ahead of schedule, the Fairbanks-Nenana road project is now finished.

Oct. 10, 1933 — Pilot Al Monsen of the Pacific Alaska Airways flew to Livengood this morning, returning with Ted Hudson and William P. Estorffe as passengers to Fairbanks.

Pilot S.E. Robbins hopped to Circle Hot Springs with a load of freight for the Circle Springs Trading company. “Robbie” returned with five passengers this afternoon.
