Arts council names Nancy Lord laureate

Published Monday, October 6, 2008

The Alaska State Council on the Arts picked Homer writer Nancy Lord as the Alaska State Writer Laureate for a two-year term starting this month.

Lord has written a number of books, including “Fishcamp: Life on an Alaskan Shore” and “Beluga Days: Tracking a White Whale’s Truths.”

She moved to Homer in 1973 after receiving a master’s degree in writing from Vermont College, according to a news release from the council.

“Nancy has wonderful insight in the Alaskan experience, and both the emotional and intellectual intelligence to serve all Alaskans well in this new capacity,” wrote Ben Brown, the arts council’s chairman, in the release.

Lord succeeds John Straley from Sitka.
