Oct. 3, 1998 — Trying to halt the worst outbreak of measles in America this year, the state required Friday that all Alaska schoolchildren have two doses of vaccine. Eighteen confirmed cases and 33 suspected cases of measles have been reported statewide by Friday, said Dr. Jon Middaugh, the state epidemiologist. “Without this kind of intervention, we know that it’s extremely likely that this outbreak would continue to spread,” Middaugh said.

The order could require shots for as many as 80,000 children, or about half of the school-age population.

Oct. 3, 1983 — The state Division of Forestry in Fairbanks will collect some $147,000 as a result of nine commercial timber sales auctioned off in the fire damaged Rosie Creek area on Thursday.

Interest varied, with bidding competitive on some lots and uncontested at minimum price on others. Most of the money will go to the state’s general fund, but 25 percent will be designated to reforestation efforts under the new law designating an Interior Alaska state forest.

Oct. 3, 1958 — Alaska Airlines made the first commercial flight to Ice Island, officially known as Drifting Station A. It was an experimental flight, taking supplies to the island where scientists are studying the vagaries of the ice of the Polar Pack.

The location was 250 miles south of the North Pole. The landing strip was the farthest north in all this world. No commercial plane had tried the trip before.

Oct. 3, 1933 — Mrs. Carter, wife of C.C. Carter, physician in charge of Tanana hospital, and their young son, Robert, left on the steamer Yukon to spend the winter in California.

Oct. 3, 1908 — There is a sugar scare among local dealers. Either some shrewd speculator is juggling the market and has a lot of the coffee sweetener cached away or else there will be a decided shortage before navigation opens again.

It is claimed that the Northern Commercial Company is the only firm that has any sugar worthwhile, and it has quit jobbing it to the retail stores.
