Fire department improves its rating

Published Thursday, October 2, 2008

FAIRBANKS — The North Star Volunteer Fire Department has greatly improved its Insurance Services Organization rating.

The rating is given out every 10 years and is used by insurance companies to determine rates for fire insurance policies. North Star prepared for the evaluation for the past three years with extra training and drills.

The new rating could provide savings on insurance policies of up to 50 percent.

North Star Fire Chief Jeff Tucker called the improved rating a “tremendous accomplishment,” in a press release, and said such an improvement is almost unheard of for an Alaska fire department.
