First planes take off, land at new Sea-Tac runway

SEATAC, Wash. -- The new third runway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is officially open. The first plane to take off was an Alaska Airlines flight and the first to land was a United jet.

The Port of Seattle opened the runway Thursday after spending more than $1 billion, nearly five times the original estimate.

The new runway was constructed to reduce bad-weather flight delays.

New runways also opened at Chicago's O'Hare and Washington-Dulles airports Thursday. Sea-Tac Airport spokesman Perry Cooper says the incoming United flight had started its day at Dulles and landed in Chicago before arriving in Seattle.
